Cheers Cut

Hitting happily amongst the delicious Asian eateries on Hawker Lane, Cheers Cut is the Taiwanese answer to giant, crispy fried chicken. The 12-ounce chicken schnitzel is their signature, but they’re also known for their giant crispy squid, moreish snack boxes of nuggets, seafood and diced beef and chicken. Their sauces come in both powder and, well, sauce form, so you don’t have to sacrifice flavour for crispiness.

KYO-TO

ICYMI, Kensington Street in Chippendale is fast becoming a foodie hub of Sydney. KYO-TO is a Japanese restaurant which is influenced by the culture and vibe of Kyoto (hence the name) and is the first small restaurant to open up shop in Spice Alley. With two distinct areas, you'll find an intimate dining space in one of the old terrace houses and another space in an external courtyard.

Located in the heart of Sydney’s University district, Jap’s Table is the kind of no-frills Japanese restaurant that won’t break the bank, but will satisfy those salmon don cravings. Making good use of their traditional yakitori grill, you can choose between chicken, meat, octopus and giblet skewers (on request). They only cost $2.80 each – did we mention how affordable it is? All of the other key players are there, so if you are in the mood for ramen, big bowls of don a little bit of everything (go the tasting plate), Jap’s Table has got you covered.

An authentic French boulangerie is exactly what Sydney needed and now, it is exactly what we’ve got. Landing in the up-and-coming food hub, Rosebery, Ninou is serving up traditional French desserts and ready to eat baked goods every single day of the week. Boulangerie is just more fun to say than bakery, in the same way that baguette sounds more fancy than bread roll.

Ze Pickle

Prepare your tastebuds and let no stuffed-bun go to waste, Ze Pickle is finally here. Sydney, you wanted burgers and now we have ze mother of them all. It’s burgers just the way we love them- double jack cheese, smoked beef brisket, jalapeños, pulled pork and that sweet, sweet triple maple bacon (I’m sorry, what diet?).

Either Or

Either Or is considered a bit of a slashie – a café slash art space slash concept store, that is. Their food is beautiful and the menu features simple classics like smashed avocado on sourdough toast as well as a super fresh take on a classic salmon poké salad and coffee by local roasters Colombian Connection Coffee. The locals are already coming back for more, with the friendly service and tasty offerings hard to say no to.

Juicy Lucy

Chicken lovers, assemble! Juicy Lucy is a classic Aussie chicken shop in Sydney with a twist. What's that twist you ask? A South-Asian one, to be exact. Opened by the guys behind Sydney restaurant Sugarcane, this chicken shop in Surry Hills will be serving up burgers and wraps with a bit of Asian persuasion including the Jackie Chan (wrap with rice, Malay chicken, pickles and herbs) as well as the Lil Kim (a burger with Korean BBQ, slaw, and kim chi). Fried chicken also graces the menu as well as an ever-changing array of sides (Asian Caesar, anyone?).

Bringing a true taste of Turkey to Barangaroo (and the first permanent resident to open up shop at the development), Anason is the brainchild of Somer Sivrioglu - the man behind one of Sydney's best Turkish restaurants, Efendy. With a team of hand-picked Turkish chefs in the kitchen, the menu promises to be authentic, innovative and (of course) delicious.

Open for breakfast and lunch, Barista & Cook is a Waterloo café with healthy comfort food at its core. Lunch is salads packed with edamame, miso, black rice, fennel and marinated chickpeas while breakfast favourites are smoked trout kedgeree with spiced rice, boiled eggs, citrus yoghurt and coriander or the gilled mac‘n’cheese toastie (okay, maybe that last one isn't so healthy).

Huxley’s Sports Bar

Endlessly searching Sydney for the ultimate triple threat? Well, we’ve found it! Enjoy an afternoon at Huxley’s sports bar where the three fundamental principles of beer, burgers and sport are well and truly covered. Huxley’s is entertaining Caringbah locals with an authentic American style diner. The decor is straight out of NYC with a little southern kink thrown in. There is certainly no shortage of ribs and wings flowing amongst the lengthy list of creative ways to rehydrate including alco shakes (milkshakes for big kids). We're ordering the Oreo & Co for obvious reasons.

Originally hailing from Melbourne, Beer DeLuxe has landed on King Street Wharf (and have brought their 120-strong craft beer bible with them). Their staff is more than qualified to point you in the direction of the craft beer you didn’t even know you needed in your life and with a menu filled with beer food favourites, you won’t have to put down your coldie to chow down. If cocktails are more your style, don’t worry, they’ve got you covered as well at this bar in Sydney.

Set on busy Military Road, Toshiya is a Japanese oasis in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Cremorne Junction. The menu is full of dishes that are both non-traditional and classic, like the sashimi taco in a crispy gyoza shell holding down the fort for experimental Japanese food and seared salmon roll with avocado and spicy miso sauce for the sushi purists. In case you were wondering about dessert (of course you were), then we recommend the green tea brulée and red bean ice cream because we just can't go past a classic with a cheeky regional twist.

Spotting the green Campos singage while you’re in the depths of a caffeine drought it like seeing water in the middle of the dessert. Slightly dramatic, sure, but it’s also accurate and you know it. The newest Campos outpost at Barangaroo is continuing their mission to bright fantastic coffee to the CBD, but they’re also serving up the sweet pastry treats as their Alexandria store. All of the goodness is coming straight from Fountain Street’s Rosetta Bakery so you can expect croissants and fresh sourdough with your morning brew.

Tomi’s resume reads like the who’s who of Sydney dining, with Quay, Longrain and even MasterChef—not strictly Sydney, but you get what we mean—all on the list. Hailing from Finland, Tomi will be joining faves like Da Orazio Pizza + Porcherra, Gelato Messina and A Tavola in The Hub, and it’ll feature more than his regular Nordic-style dishes.
