Nobby’s Beach staple MexiCali has launched meat-less Mondays, embracing a totally vegan menu that will have you wondering whether you should become a fulltime convert.
At first glance the menu is seemingly jam-packed with the eateries much-loved faves, but upon closer inspection key ingredients like pulled pork have been switched out for BBQ jackfruit. Yes you read that right – fruit masquerading as meat. But stay with us here because the gang at Mexicali are seriously onto something.
The robust meat-less menu is enough to satisfy any meat-eater, so much so we’re fairly certain you’ll waddle out of there with full bellies and the urge to undo the top bottom of your jeans.
The success of meat-less Mondays is of course down to chef Thalyta Brockelt, a vegan herself who clearly pours her talent and love of plant-based food into every single dish.
While the traditional gauc and corn chips combo (drool) is on offer, we opted for the cauliflower con queso and it was, in a word — dreamy. The dip is packed with flavour and is so creamy you won’t believe there’s not even a hint of cheese in the mix.
Next up was the jackfruit chimichangas or as we like to call them, little parcels of heaven. The juicy “meaty” filling is paired with a chili cucumber vinaigrette — the perfect light and tangy accompaniment.
And we couldn’t go past a jackfruit taco either. With a generous serving of gauc and salsa this bad boy is definitely a two hander. It’s so good meat-lovers will be scratching their head marvelling at how this nom could possibly be plant-based. We promise you, the fruit actually tastes like pork.
Last but not least you HAVE to order the brussel sprouts. Crispy and zingy with lime, chili and herbs, these gems are NOT what your mum used to make you eat. In fact, you’ll absolutely clean the plate.
If that isn’t enough to convince you to pop in, then their all-night-long happy hour should do the trick. This is not a drill, beers are a fiver, margaritas are a tenner and there’s even vegan wines on offer.
So do yourself a favour and make Mondays meat-free at Mexicali.
