Take A Look At The Nike Air Fear of God Collection

By Sophie Hodges - 03 Dec 2018

One of the most hyped footwear collaborations of the year is less than a fortnight away from launching, and we’ve got all the details to get you fired up.

Nike's first collaboration with Fear of God's Jerry Lorenzo drops on December 15, and is highlighted by new apparel and an NBA-ready basketball shoe.

Let’s discuss the main event—the Nike Air Fear of God 1. Few collaborators have been given the opportunity to design their own silhouette, but if you want to put that freedom in anyone’s hands, Fear of God’s founder and creative director Jerry Lorenzo is a pretty good choice.

Lorenzo worked closely with Leo Chang—Senior Footwear Design Director, Nike Basketball—which helped to create the perfect blend of design aesthetic and performance.

Inspired by the ’80s and 90’s sports scene, Lorenzo wanted the shoe to represent the power sport has over style and design. Bringing that nostalgic feeling Lorenzo spoke to his influences, “these athletes, like Agassi and Jordan, were at the top of their game and what they wore didn’t compromise on design or beauty.”

Deep diving into the shoe specifics, it’s not hard to see why this is one of the hottest collaborations this year. The visible Nike Air may be a reference to the Air Max 180, but it’s more than aesthetic, it houses a double stack Zoom heel augmented by internal full-length Zoom. What does that mean? Super bouncy, super responsive.

Another key feature is the TPU cage, which was inspired by the Huarache Light. "We wanted a lock-in for containment, especially around the heel and mid-foot. The way it's designed creates seamless integration into the cup sole rubber” said Chang.

Beautifully summing up how he wants the shoe to hit the market Lorenzo says, “this is for all the kids coming up in small cities with big-city dreams. It’s about what he feels he should have, not what he thinks he should have based on what society's telling him.”
