Your weekly dose of new openings, new menus, and new products all rolled up into one is back for another issue. Auckland is a fast-paced place and it’s never short of foodie news. 

This week there’s a seasonal change of menus, wines and beers galore, and a new Uber Eats offer you do not want to miss. 

Saan Introduces New Menu 

Ponsonby’s favourite Thai eatery welcomes seven new dishes to their menu. Head chef Chutima Polvit has created each dish, staying true to Saan’s authentic northern Thai cuisine. On the line-up, you’ll find roasted eggplant chilli and mushroom dip, crispy red tofu curry, lemongrass chicken, roasted duck breast on a vegetable curry. There’s also deep-fried whole fish wraps, a new marinade for the classic market fish, and Thai fried banana with salted coconut cream. Yum. The new menu is available now at the Ponsonby Road restaurant. 

Lucky Tacos At 46&York

It’s a match made in heaven this weekend at Parnell’s 46&York. Friday to Sunday, any guest who purchases an ice-cold Spanish Estrella Damn beer between 4pm and 8pm will also get a hot, fresh taco from Lucky Taco. Nothing can quite beat a cold beer and fresh taco on a sunny afternoon. Don’t miss your chance to finally get your hands on a Lucky Taco after their busy summer exclusively catering private events. 

Mexico Welcomes Autumn With A New Menu 

Fan-favourite Mexico launches its new autumn-inspired menu on March 18th. Bringing back some classics such as the cinnamon braised pork-belly with beetroot mojo and pork crackling to warm you up as the temperature drops. There are brand new vegan dishes served up too, including the jackfruit conchinita pibil with beetroot daikon, and the agave and nutmeg pumpkin with queso, spiced pepitas, and mint and salsa borracha. Mexico also aims to bump up their eco-friendly attitude with compostable paper straws, plant-based takeaway boxes, and locally sourced and sustainable proteins. 

Cloudy Bay Opens The Shed 

Central Otago’s Cloudy Bay Vineyard Estate is excited to announce the opening of their new Cellar Door, The Shed. Designed for a luxurious and relaxed experience, The Shed sits next to Lake Dunstan and offers tastings of Cloudy Bay’s full range, with food available on the side. The Shed is also home to the iconic Cloudy Bay Te Wahi Pinot Noir, combining the distinctive qualities of the Calvert and Northburn vineyards. The Shed is open daily from 11am-5pm, or guests can opt for a private testing and a custom-made experience instead. 

Something & Social Added To The Newmarket Line Up 

From the masterminds behind the award-winning Pilkingtons comes Something & Social. The all-day casual dining space will be setting up shop on Newmarket Westfield’s Rooftop on Broadway. Offering great views away from the busy street, Something & Social will also be serving up a speciality pizza menu, premium beer, wine, cocktails, coffee, and a dedicated gin garden with a customized menu. They’ll be joining Bird on a Wire, White + Wong’s, Tai Ping, and Sardine at Newmarket’s fresh food precinct. 

A Dozen Fresh Oysters Straight To Your Door 

You can now enjoy freshly shucked oysters from the comfort of your work desk, home, or any other place you choose thanks to Uber Eats' latest launch. The food delivery service will now allow you to order Auckland Fish Market’s Billypot’s fresh Bluff oysters straight to your door. Turning up on ice and with a wedge of lemon, there’s truly no better way to get your seafood fix. 

Ampersand & Supernatural Wines Are Hosting Dinner 

Ampersand Eatery is throwing an extravagant dinner party on Thursday, 27 March in celebration of the latest additions to the Supernatural Wine Co. portfolio. Chef Mikey Newlands has created the six-course menu, presented by Supernatural Wine Co. Every course will match each of their six new wonderful wines. The night will be held at the Orakei eatery and bookings can be made directly on the website. 

Daily Bread Hits The Web

The Point Chevalier comfort-food fix is making its way to the interwebs this week with the launch of their online store. Daily Bread will now deliver bread, deli items, and pastries to North Shore suburbs on Wednesdays and Central Auckland suburbs on Thursdays. As the team at Daily Bread find their feet, more options will be available. Their famous Hot Cross Buns will also make a comeback this week, available online and in store. To sweeten the deal, Daily Bread has also launched their Friday Pizza Nights. From 5pm to 9pm their sourdough wood-fired pizza menu will be live, as well as soft serve ice creams, wine, and beers. 

CC Social Club At The Viaduct 

Auckland Viaduct’s White + Wong’s and Sardine will team up to create the Canadian Club Social Club every Sunday in March. Encouraging you to get social in the sun, Sardine will have CC & Dry on tap for just $10, Canadian Club Cocktails, and giveaways from 3pm. This Sunday 17th will host Together With Andy Jv & Jarrod Phillips for some good vibes and good beats. 

Free Pizza At Freeman And Grey 

Following their seventh birthday, Freeman & Grey is having a makeover and they want to celebrate with free pizza. The beloved Ponsonby bar is hosting their official Re-Launch Party on Saturday, 23 March with Corona. There will be ice cold drinks such as Pimms Cups, Coronaritas, and Fresso Martinis, as well as entertainment from Eastern Bloc, Louis V, General Lee, Sammie, and more. The most exciting detail, however—between 5pm and 7pm, Freeman and Grey is serving up their piping hot pizzas at no cost. 

What the Fat? Recipes

Following the success of What the Fat? Wither Hills Celebrates 25 

Wither Hills New Zealand Wine has launched their 25th Birthday Cellar Collection. The collection consists of a family of craft, small-batch wines including the Honourable 2014 Vintage Pinot Noir, Late Harvest 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, and a spritz Moscato. Up until now the wines were only available at their Marlborough vineyard but will be available for a limited time around New Zealand. With the purchase of any Wither Hills wine from selected stockists around the country throughout March and April, buyers can go into the draw to win travel and accommodation to Marlborough to attend Wither Hills 25th birthday party. 

Mac’s IPA Pressure Drop

If you love your hops, you’ll be hoppy to know Mac’s is brewing up a storm with their latest limited edition IPA Pressure Drop. The brew hits a seven on the flavour scale, packing a flavourful punch with a large contribution of whirlpool and dry hops. Described as loaded with fruit flavour, a slightly cloudy haze appearance with a burnt orange hue, and a solid bitterness bite that we know and love. The IPA Pressure Drop is now available in four packs at supermarkets and liquor stores. 

Liquor King Turns Twenty-Seven 

Maturing like the fine wines they stock, Liquor King reaches their late 20’s this month and they want you to help celebrate. The company opened its first store in Ponsonby almost three decades ago, and now have more than 25 stores around the country. Head into any Liquor King this month for drink specials on selected liquors, wines, and beers, as well as free gift wrapping with a unique bespoke birthday wrapping paper.
