Just when we thought Takapuna couldn’t get any better, a brand new opening pops up and reminds us it’s one of the best spots in town.
Meet The Coop, a new joint on Hurstmere Road dedicated to seriously good fried chicken. Step inside to find a monochromatic urban fit out with sprawling murals, a games machine out back and baby chick paraphernalia. Follow the sweet smell of freshly fried chicken to land yourself in what’s soon to be one of the most coveted dining chairs in town.
Your taste buds have owner, chef and all around good bloke Danny Simpson to thank for The Coop. With a mission to provide Aucklanders with fried chicken ‘as it should be’, Danny has worked tirelessly to perfect their secret recipe.
“We don’t just focus on making the coating the best it can be, but also the actual chicken itself,” says Danny. “It’s the best it can be for the customer.”
Available in eight different varieties, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice with each creation just as good as the last. Garnished with carefully thought through pairings, each combination is a stand out in its own right. And the best part? You can choose between boneless chicken thighs or juicy wings.
Kick things off with the original jerk fried chicken. Crisp and juicy, you’ll taste the teams' extensive preparation process with your first bite into the crunchy coating. Heaven.
For those who like a bit of a tang with their crunch, look no further than the kimchi offering. Drizzled in gochujang mayo and topped with napa cabbage kimchi, this combo not only proves that fried chicken is an art, but that The Coop is Picasso.
Smooth and comforting, the blue cheese creation is our top pick. Laden with buttermilk dressing, baby herbs, chives and bits of dreamy blue, the flavours contrast beautifully. These may just be too good to share.
If you can pull your salivating appetite from the glorious fried chicken, don’t miss the mind-blowing sweetcorn hush puppies. Spiked with jalapeño and served with wicked chipotle sauce, they’re the perfect side dish.
Wash it all down with one of their ice cream thick shakes. Doing away with syrups, they’re prepared with real ice cream and are almost too pretty to drink (almost). Our top pick is the banana, a blissful blend of banana milk, topped with whipped cream, popcorn and drizzled in salted caramel.
Or, if you’re looking to the beat the heat, opt one of the refreshing house-brewed ice teas. Available in lemon and cucumber, blood orange and spiced apple crumble, they’re just what your summer ordered.
Developed with a conscious, all takeaway materials used are biodegradable, yes, even the plastic, because as Danny puts it “just because we’ve opened doesn’t mean we need to be killing the world in the process.”
Bursting at the seams with flavour, The Coop deserves to be firmly placed at the top of your foodie bucket list.
