DuoTone was on my hit list for months before I actually made it there. Residing down the eastern end of P-town and only open on weekdays, it isn’t the easiest place to get to without a bit of pre-planning if you don’t work in the city. So it was with much anticipation that I walked in there on a recent Friday morning for a pre-work breakfast with a friend.
The first thing you’ll notice about DuoTone is the clean, bright white interiors with pops of colour thanks to the yellow stools but the thing you’ll remember is the food. One glance at the menu and the only thing I could think was why didn’t I come with more friends so I could try errrythang!
But first, drinks. We started with a delicious matcha latte—not too matcha-y but not too sweet either—and a perfect coffee. I watched on as someone else drank the PB&J superfood smoothie and kicked myself for not ordering it. Packed with whey protein it’s a full breakfast in itself, but boy oh boy I wanted that icy peanut buttery goodness in my hot little hands so badly (as well as my breakfast, obviously)!
My disappointment was well and truly curbed when breakfast arrived though. Recommended by the amazingly friendly staff, the sweet potato stack was not what I was expecting but oh so much better! Like a bird’s nest of crispy sweet potato noodles, the texture of that along with the herbed avo mash, poached egg and dukkah was a serious treat for the tastebuds. We also got the greens and eggs, super healthy and totally delicious with avo, blanched snow peas and a couple of poached eggs.
I walked out 100% satisfied and with a list as long as my arm of reasons to come back. Number one was clearly the PB&J smoothie, but the mushroom bruschetta and every single lunch option—from the nourish lunch bowl to the pulled pork burger—came in pretty close. The fact that they do one dollar coffee with lunch on Monday and Tuesday is just the icing on the cake!
