How To Refresh Your Wardrobe Without Blowing Your Savings

By Rachel Lay - 17 Oct 2018

Transitional dressing is one of the most annoying parts about the change of seasons. Everything you own feels wrong, and you don’t have the cash to splurge on a tonne of new pieces to wear. It’s the worst.

This year we vowed it would be different, so we enlisted the help of the fashion experts at DFO Perth (who just opened by the way) to break it down into three easy steps for us. Trust us, it really is as easy as it sounds.

Good luck!

#1 Try It All On

First things first, figure out what the heck is actually going on in your wardrobe. As in, what do you actually own? Like, inside the tubs of “winter woolies” and beyond—we’re talking a serious deep dive people. Try everything on, act out your own Sex and the City montage, assess it for damage and ask yourself the big question: will I wear this? Further to that, HAVE you worn it? Don’t keep something around in your wardrobe because it might work for a perfect occasion, keep something around because it does work for your wardrobe. In multiple ways.

It’s typically at this point that you realise you have approximately 29 pairs of jeans, and you only wear three of them. Be harsh here, if you don’t wear it—get rid of it. No 'ifs' or 'buts'. Time to practice some tough love.

Getting rid of it doesn’t have to mean chucking it in the donation bin; you can also look at options like selling it, swapping it with your friends, or even renting it out (as long as it's still in good nick).

If you're really looking to take it next level, you can even download a Clueless-style app to make sure you're wearing everything in your closet, and utilising your clothes to their fullest potential—not just wearing the same thing on rotation. We love ClosetSpace to match our outfits and give us inspo for all those times we've been like "WHY DO I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR?!" You know what we mean, don't act like you don't.

#2 Fill In The Blanks

Once you’ve culled the dead (winter) weight in your wardrobe it will become apparent what’s missing, and what you have in surplus. If you’re killing it in the denim game, but don’t have a nice top to take you from winter to spring and right through summer, add that to your shopping list. Take note of where the gaps are as you create your shopping list, and don't be tempted to stock up on anything you have a multitude of.

Once you know what you’re after, head somewhere like DFO to find killer brands at up to 70% off. This way, when you’re refreshing your wardrobe each season you won’t be blowing your budget, and you’ll be investing in quality, name-brand pieces that will last you year after year. Winning. Think staples, here. We've got our eye on a white collared shirt and a classic LBD that transcend seasons.

#3 Use Accessories To Change It Up

Next, take a look at your accessories. If you’ve got a bunch of chic sneakers that gave you life all through winter and nothing to wear come spring, now is the perfect time to add excitement to your wardrobe with accessories like sandals. Or earrings. Or belts. The world is your oyster after all, so go wild. But we strongly recommend referring back to Step #2 and only fill in the blanks you need (our biggest must-buy accessories this season would be the perfect pair of slides and statement sunglasses). Just make sure to try all the options available (it's a hard job but someone's got to do it) so you can be sure of your pick.

Again, we recommend opting for high-quality brands here so they’ll last you across seasons. Luckily, you can find top quality pieces from your fave brands at DFO for up to 70% off, so make a beeline there.

See, three steps. Wasn’t that easy?!
