We’re pretty lucky that Perth is home to some of the best coffee in the world, but when it comes to bevvies for non-coffee drinkers we’re put to shame by the rest of the world (mainly Starbucks).
Not everyone drinks coffee (eg. me), so why should we have to suffer through shoddy, scalding hot chocolates, flavourless chai lattes and a boring tea selection? It’s just not good enough! Rant over.
Thankfully, there are some awesome Perth cafes putting as much emphasis into the rest of their hot drink offering, as they are with their coffee.
Here’s some of Perth’s best cafes for non-coffee drinkers—as well as some tips on how to make the best hot chocolate ever for all those baristas out there looking to level up their game (and make one Urban List writer very happy)!
Next time you hit up Flo for one of their incredible kimchi and cheese toasties, do yourself a favour and order a Belgian hot chocolate. Hands down, the best hot chocolate I’ve tried in Perth, this bad boy is smooth and creamy with the perfect balance of chocolate and milk. It’s so tasty no marshmallows are required—gasp!
City Farm Cafe
Coffee drinkers shouldn’t get all the frothy fun! If you’re a tea lover like me and looking to foam things up a bit head to City Farm Cafe in East Perth and order the London Fog. An Earl Grey tea made with steamed milk and a pinch of Lavender—this beauty goes down a treat and will leave you wondering why all teas aren’t made this way!
Serving up alternative lattes and plenty of tea, Pachi Pachi in Victoria Park already secured a place in our hearts with their matcha frappes and lattes—but if you’re not a huge green tea fan you have got to try their taro latte. This frothy purple creation is sweet, creamy and super fun to drink.
Bagels And Beans
You’re going to want to hold back on the marshmallows with the hot choc from Bagels and Beans in West Perth, this baby is plenty sweet enough. With a rich and full chocolate flavour, there will be no going back to the canister of drinking chocolate you keep in your desk drawer after trying this!
If you haven’t seen Cafe 2TwentyFour’s Wonderland Hot Chocolate on Instagram do yourself a favour and check it out here. Imagine a frothed up hot chocolate, covered in a web of chocolate sauce and chocolate sprinkles, served on a bed of hundreds and thousands with a giant mound of fairy floss on the side. And if that wasn’t enough it even comes with marshmallows and Tiny Teddy’s. Coffee looks pretty lame now, eh?!
Belgian hot chocolate, taro and matcha lattes, as well as some crazy looking freakshakes and waffles, Dessert Room in Karawara cater to the non-coffee loving uni student in all of us. You remember…the one who didn’t care about counting calories!
Just like everything in this homeware store and cafe, Eillo’s matcha lattes are pretty freakin’ beautiful. A must-try for green tea lovers! They also do one heck of a bounty hot chocolate!
Serving chai, matcha and taro lattes, if you’re new to the green tea latte game you’re going to want to head to Superstar Waffles first. The perfect combination of creamy and sweet goodness, you’ll be amazed you’re drinking something vaguely healthy!
We’re so happy Perth cafes are getting creative with their hot chocolates as well as their coffees. At BOHO Espresso you can pick up an orange infused hot choccy—made with real dark chocolate, cream and infused with orange and cinnamon.
You aren’t living if you haven’t tried a Callebaut Belgian hot chocolate from the Beaufort Local. Choose from dark, milk or white (we love the white), and watch the chocolate goodness melt away as you stir it into steamed milk. It’s a real treat! Beaufort Local have also got tons of teas if you’re feeling a little less indulgent.
A proper hot chocolate IS NOT warm milk mixed with drinking chocolate. A PROPER hot chocolate is exactly what is served up at Toastface Grillah in Perth. It’s the perfect temperature, super chocolatey (none of that milk warmed up business) and comes in at a decent price. PLUS, you can get toasties there!
Not only do they serve hot chocolates and green tea lattes, Duende in Leederville have got two chai lattes on the menu for the spiced drink lovers out there. Our preference is the fresh Prana tea chai latte with a little side serving of honey.
The legends at BOO Espresso in Highgate have made it way easier for Perthians to get their pumpkin spice fix when not in the US of A. They’re serving up a freakin’ tasty pumpkin spiced chai latte which we’ve dubbed ‘The Elixir of Life’. Get on down to this hole-in-the-wall coffee spot stat for liquid deliciousness!
The Belgian couverture hot chocolate from Epic Espresso in West Perth is serious business. Made with one part Belgian chocolate and four parts milk and foam it goes down super smooth!
Perth and Claremont
While they sit on the pricier side, the hot chocolate from Koko Black is definitely worth it. This bad boy is brewed fro two hours and available in classic Belgian, mocha, chilli, cinnamon and hazelnut varieties. If you’re feeling like $7 is a little too steep then you can always opt for the baby hot chocolate—Koko Black’s signature Belgian hot chocolate, served warm, not hot (as they should be).
You know what goes well with chocolate? Peanut butter. Here’s where to find Perth’s Best Peanut Butter Everything!
