Feijoa Fiesta

If you aren’t sure what a feijoa is, it’s about time you learnt. And what better way to get a feijoa education than with a lengthy wine-filled lunch in the gorgeous Sunshine Coast hinterlands?

Taking over Hinterland Feijoas, Australia’s first organic feijoa farm, the fiesta is part of Curated Plate, an epic food and wine festival hitting the Sunshine Coast for four days this August. While you might want to check out a few other delicious events happening throughout the festival, including this long lunch, the one we’re frothing for is the celebration of all things feijoa on Sunday 1 August.

First things first though, what the hell is a feijoa? Imagine a fruit resembling a lime that, once cut open, looks a bit like a cucumber, with a sweet flavour that sits somewhere between a guava and a pineapple. New Zealanders are wild for them, and for good reason—which you’ll find out if you nab tickets to Feijoa Fiesta.

Bringing the feijoa farm to the table (literally) are Clayton Wells from Automata and A1 Canteen in Sydney, Matt Stone from Oakridge in the Yarra Valley and Darren Robertson of Three Blue Ducks & The Farm fame. All three chefs share the philosophy of preparing fresh, sustainable, locally-sourced whole-foods, and will be bringing that ethos to the grazing event, dishing up a plethora of unique dishes alongside a selection of premium wines and beers.

Head here if you want to see the full menu, but to get you excited, the drool-worthy line up of eats includes rosemary smoked Moreton Bay bug tail with caramelised feijoa to start and feijoa sorbet with chocolate and macadamia cookie for a sweet finisher. Even if you’re still confused about what the damn things are, you can’t deny how good the feast sounds. Tickets even include transport from several Sunshine Coast hubs so you can book in for the weekend and wine it up, how good is that?
