Tucked away in the streets of Sydney’s Chinatown, Choux Love is a desert lovers dream. We didn’t think crepes could get any better, but it turns out we were wrong! While they may not be French, these guys have deserts down, taking a classic French recipe and giving it an Asian twist with their “Mille” crepe dish. Who can say no to 20 layers of thin crepes filled with layer upon layer of cream? Not us that’s for sure. And the goodness doesn’t stop there, you can feast your eyes before filling your bellies with the pastries, cakes and other treats on display in the cabinets.

Revamped pubs are popping up left, right and centre, but our money is on The Bank Hotel (ha, get it?) as one of the best. The King Street institution in Newtown offers exceptional Latino flavours thanks to SoCal’s Zac Smart who has ventured to the other side of the bridge to take over the kitchen. With a charcoal barbeque, the beer garden now channels a back lane festival with a relaxed vibe and a Latino influence. The food is incredibly bueno too; the octopus with romesco and the corn fritters with green tomato salsa are our picks.

Bite, Chew, Drink, it’s an Korean-American fusion eatery in the CBD, serving fried chicken wings with options. No doubt, our favourite dish on their menu is the panne pasta bowl, and as expected, it’s a huge serve of creamy pasta served in a bowl made from bread #heaven. But in case you’re watching your carb intake, then order the super cheesy pasta with Korean hot sauce, because life is all about balance after all.

Vernon’s Bar describes themselves as cheeky, dapper and chill, which is accurately reflected at the bar with their Willy Chapman cocktail (sloe gin, apricot and prosecco), too much gin (not actually possible) and boutique beers. The food at this bar in Summer Hill is worth a mention, since it would proudly sit on any menu in the CBD and Chef RJ (formerly of Longrain) has added his own personal flair to the offerings. Think dishes like hiramasa kingfish crudos with ruby grapefruit, cucumber and horseradish and a chestnut, Jerusalem artichoke and portobello pie.

Public House Petersham may not be the new kid on the block anymore but it sure is the kid you want to be making friends with. At Fishbowl Poke Bar you can literally design your own salad, with their BYOB (build your own bowl) concept that means you don’t have to settle for any ingredients that you don’t like. The process is simple – select your base, then sashimi and then add in any of the house prepared toppings and dressings on offer.
Balcon by Tapavino
The guys from Bar Tapavino on Bulletin Place have opened Balcon By Tapavino on Bligh Street, and we're quietly confident it will be our new favourite bar in the CBD. Their second venue brings one seriously impressive wine bar, and a restaurant complete with a unique food menu to our fair city.
