Nothing impresses us more here at The Urban List than a Melburnian who really knows how to mix up a good cocktail. And I don’t just mean a gin and tonic (while it might be delicious, pouring Hendricks and tonic water into a glass doesn’t warrant cocktail-making skills, no matter how many slices of cucumber or miniature umbrellas you add...). I mean a serious drink. A REAL cocktail. Something that looks at home in the hand of one of James Bond’s villains, or a Kardashian on a yacht. So, where can you find an awesome cocktail class in Melbourne that lets you pick up badass bartending skills, while having heaps of fun to boot?
The Joinery in Elwood, aka. one of Melbourne’s best cocktail bars on the southside, has just announced its latest series of cocktail and canapé evenings, where not only will you get to try some delicious drinks alongside a few mouth-watering nibbles, you’ll also be taught how to shake, stir and smoke spirits in a cocktail-making masterclass. Throughout the cocktail making session, attendees will get hands-on with the essential techniques it takes to become one of the best bartenders in the city.
Beginning with a glass of something bubbly, The Joinery’s cocktail making classes are a fun and relaxed experience, where you’ll walk away with some top-shelf skills. After a brief introduction to the history of cocktail making, including some important mixology tips, you will then be invited to pick up a shaker and get to grips with three key bartending skills that make for an epic drink.
Over the duration of the class, you will make three different cocktails, each of which focuses on a different technique. The Joinery’s expert staff will be on hand to guide you through shaking vs. stirring methods, adding a smoky finish to your drink of choice, and perfecting essential garnishing skills, from creating the perfect salt-rimmed glass to adding fruity flourishes to your masterpieces.
Of course, no cocktail class in Melbourne would be complete without a sampling of the finished drink(s)… The telling is in the tasting, Listers! Not only will you sipping your own creations along the way, you’ll also be invited to relax with something made by one of The Joinery’s master mixologists, as well as some tasty sharing plates, once the hard work is over. Sounds like the perfect way to start a night out with friends, amirite?
The Joinery bar and eatery itself is a fantastic hidden gem. A buzzing Elwood cafe by day and lively bar by night, the venue has made a name for itself, serving up delicious breakfasts and wonderful lunch and dinner options that change with the seasons. While the cocktail classes might be the latest addition to its offering, it’s the breakfast plate, complete with a boiled egg, Vegemite and cheese toast soldiers, bircher and mini-pancakes (so cuuute!) that keeps us coming back, morning after morning, for an epic start to our day. We’re sure it’d make a killer post-cocktail hangover feed too. In fact, maybe we’ll test that theory this weekend…
Toast soldiers aside, The Joinery’s cocktail classes range in size from three people to a seating of a dozen, and are the perfect solution for a birthday outing, hens or bucks day activity, or just a sipping session with your mates where you’ll actually wake up the next day having learned something. Keen to master your Manhattan, or finesse your Old Fashioned? Lock in a date for these bayside cocktail making classes now, Listers.
