In your younger years, you no doubt stared at the “10c in SA only” print on the side of your favourite soft drink can. Hoping that one day you could cash in your sugar addiction.

Now—amid Victoria’s recycling crisis—you can do exactly that. Well, as of 2023.

Premier Daniel Andrews has announced that a container deposit scheme will be brought in to help reduce waste in Victoria, "We're introducing a container deposit scheme in Victoria," Mr Andrews said in a Facebook post this morning. It will reduce litter and waste. And it's just one part of a massive overhaul of our state's recycling industry."

Victoria is the last state to get on board a recycling scheme such as this, with South Australia leading the way since 1977, and other states finally bringing in similar processes over the past decade.

As part of today’s press conference, it was announced that there will be 40 Melbourne councils that will introduce a glass only bin to the mix in 2021. Hobsons Bay Council in Melbourne’s west has recently introduced a four bin system that has a glass only bin.
