Burger Project | Bourke St
There aren’t many places left where you can get free soft drink refills. But we’re happy to report Neil Perry’s new Burger Project goes one step better.
Mr West
Mr West Bar & Bottleshop is one of the newest additions to Footscray’s thumping bar scene. And trust us when we say—this place stocks everything. Like, everything.
Cake Bar
Cake, coffee and cocktails. That’s the holy trifecta being served up at Cake Bar, Geelong’s brand new, err, cake bar.
Billy Van Creamy
Billy van Creamy has an origin story to rival Wolverine. It started with brothers Alex and Mitch Wells, making ice-cream by hand in the kitchen of the Thornbury Bowls Club, slinging cups from a self-fitted food truck at Rucker’s Hill in Northcote.
Sparrows
Bayside locals, you’ve just been handed a gift from the summer gods—a classy 1920s Spritz bar, with a leafy gin garden out back.
Red Gum BBQ
Mt Eliza couple Melissa and Martin Goffin have had a while to polish their BBQ skills. They’ve been running Red Gum BBQ at pop-ups and markets all over the Mornington Peninsula for 12 years, dishing up brisket and mac n’ cheese by the truckload.
Johnny Ripe
When you’re cruising down the beach this summer and those buttery, sugary cravings kick in after a solid stint in the salty seas—you'd be mad not to head up to Johnny Ripe.
Hellenic Republic | Brighton
The latest addition to the Brighton food scene needs very little introduction. George Calombaris’ Hellenic Republic has been keeping the masses fed in Brunswick East, Kew and Williamstown for many years, and now the restaurant has set up shop on the well-to-do Church Street strip in Brighton.
North Walls
North Walls in Brunswick is the primo spot for hanging off some walls, run by Sam Percy (a Brunswick local for over 15 years). Sam envisioned a climbing spot in the northern suburbs with a chilled out community vibe and a focus on catering to a variety of climbers. From your regular Joes to seasoned veteran climbers. North Walls is an environment where people can climb, hangout, listen to some sweet tunes, and have a good time.
Hinoak
The brand new kid on the block in Glen Waverly isn’t one you can easily miss. In fact, we're struggling to think of a more beautiful opening all year. It’s a smoky Korean BBQ joint with the most oooh and ahhh architecture you’ve ever seen.
Small Graces
Man this cafe is pretty. Like Pinterest-level pretty. If Small Graces is a little window into the future of Melbourne’s foodie aesthetic, we’re bloody excited for the future.
Greek Street Food
Bahh, Oink, Cluck! It might sound like a farmyard when you hear people ordering at Greek Street Food, but that’s just all part of the fun.
The Bridesmaids Studio
It’s one of the wedding traditions we don’t talk about. Get the bridesmaids to wear hideous dresses so that, by direct comparison, the bride looks like some luminous alien brought down from heaven.
Abacus All Day
If you’re a resident of Ringwood, you’d be pretty happy with the foodie developments taking place at Town Square in Eastland. First came burger pros Huxtaburger, then 400 Gradi, slinging cocktails and those epic pizzas into the wee hours.
Hunky Dory | Port Melbourne
The original hunk. This is the place Hunky Dory began, back at the dawn of time. Bay St Port Melbourne was a simple place in those days. But although cafes have come and gone along the trendy strip, Hunky Dory has stuck around, and it’s still as popular as ever.
Yokocho
Picture this—it’s a balmy night in Melbourne, you’re sitting on the balcony overlooking Bourke Street, sipping on a Sakura Collins cocktail and feasting on some sashimi that literally looks too good to eat. Welcome to Yokochō, the brand new Japanese venture by Benny Lui, the brains behind Seoulja Boy.
Takeaway Pizza
Takeaway Pizza’s motto is “no fuss...just pizza, beer and good times.” What else would you expect from a place whose logo is a slice of pepperoni holding a martini.
Palermo
You can never have too many Argentine BBQ restaurants, that’s our motto. Palermo is the latest project from the guys behind San Telmo and Pastuso—a classy, subterranean, asado-powered Argentinian steak joint.
DenDeke
Traditionally, an izakaya bar is a place to knock off after work and enjoy a few quiet sakes (...and then a few extremely rowdy sakes). But there’s not really anywhere to do that if you live in Melbourne’s far north...until now, baby.
Burnley Brewing
There’s something interesting happening down the Yarra end of Bridge Rd...One by one, cool little venues are popping up, turning this once sleepy strip into a craft beer bonanza. And the latest wolf to join the pack is this guy—Burnley Brewing.
Tiramisu Lift Me Up
When it comes to food trucks these days, it takes a lot to make Melbourne sit up and take notice. We like to think we’ve seen it all before. Well we just found something you haven’t seen: a vintage Italian three-wheeler, driving all over town serving cups of homemade tiramisu.
The Village Belle
There’s a certain feeling you get at the new Village Belle. We don’t know what it’s called, but it happens around 4pm, when the sun’s out, and you’re sitting at the courtyard sipping your third mojito, tucking into a giant pizza.
FIGO Cantina
Melbourne isn’t short of Italian restaurants, but what it’s missing is a traditional salumi and formaggi bar...until now. FIGO Cantina, an Italian dine-in deli, just opened in Elwood, and we're frothing at the mouth.
Once Alike
In a Collingwood backstreet, behind a dark curtain, there is a cafe with a very strange barista. This barista has no face, hair, pulse or eyes (apart from a slightly Terminator-esque glowing red orb, which seems to follow you ‘round the room).
The Skin Boutique
While we all love to treat ourselves to a little facial here and some hair removal there, the struggle can definitely be real trying to find that perfect unicorn of a beauty therapist: one that's both high-tech AND affordable.
Down The Rabbit Hole
There’s a good buzz going when we walk into Down The Rabbit Hole—and it’s only a sleepy Wednesday in Templestowe. God knows what it’s like during peak brunch hour on Sundays...
Pezzo
We’re calling it—this might be the most stunning fit-out of the year. Guy Grossi, you’ve outdone yourself, as per usual.
Rude Boy Burger
There’s nothing finer than being in this diner, nestled in the backstreets of Brunswick West. Rude Boy Burgers (shout out to Rhianna) are flipping and grilling like no tomorrow.
Tolarno Eating House & Bar
Dining at Tolarno Eating House & Bar is a little like dining in the middle of an art gallery. The classic St Kilda eatery just re-opened its doors, and it’s bringing major old-school vibes to Fitzroy St.
AURA | Malvern
Online homewares giant AURA has just opened their first official bricks and mortar store, and our bank accounts are terrified.
Pier Farm
If you’re gonna open a classy bistro on the Williamstown foreshore, it makes sense to think seafood. Give the people what they want—especially if what they want swims, crawls or bobs in the ocean and tastes great with a squeeze of lemon.
Fort Green
The trick with healthy cafes is finding one that doesn’t feel like you’re deliberately withholding. If your local does a salad bowl that you actually WANT to eat, that you crave even on a ‘binge day’, consider yourself #blessed. Fort Green is that kind of place.
Bowerbird
Barman and owner Max Ware always knew he wanted to open a bar after years of experience in other prominent Melbourne destinations. He just wasn’t sure what kind of bar.
Mama Manoush
After a while it became obvious: Mama Manoush was gonna have to move. The Nicholson St favourite, which has been dishing up lip-smacking Lebanese cuisine for years, had become too big for its boots. Owner Anthony Hachem realised they needed larger digs, and he’s found the perfect spot—right at the top of Lygon St.
Beyond Rest
I strip off and climb into the giant, neon-lit pod, feeling only slightly self-conscious about the whole thing. This is float therapy—anti-gravity, sensory deprivation—a giant enclosed bath containing 500L of super-saturated Epsom salts. It’s about as close to the Dead Sea experience as you’re gonna get in Collingwood’s backstreet warehouse district.
The Vedette
Next time you’re chowing down on a burger at Skipping Girl Takeaway, grab one of the staff and ask them—very discreetly—if they can take you to the bar. They’ll wink, give you a secret hand signal, then lead you upstairs to Skipping Girl’s secret new speakeasy, The Vedette.
Hawker Chan
There’s only one hawker cart in the Michelin Singapore guide, and this is it. Hawker Chan, the runaway culinary phenomenon, and one of the most affordable Michelin starred meals you’re ever going to eat, has officially arrived in Melbourne.
Hunky Dory | South Yarra
Everyone’s got a favourite fish and chip shop, but we’re going to chuck another one into the mix: Hunky Dory in South Yarra.
Industry Beans | Little Collins St
Industry Beans has been pumping liquid gold into the veins of Fitzroy hipsters since 2013, when brothers Trevor and Steve Simmons set up shop on Rose St. The warehouse cafe and roastery quickly became a staple on Melbourne’s hyper-caffeinated food scene, and you can get their award-winning beans in dozens of venues all over town.
BlendCo | Yarra’s Edge
BlendCo started from humble beginnings—a festival food truck slinging health bowls to hungry hippies. Then came the Hawthorn cafe. The business grew, more and more people learned the value of acai. Yep, the superfood specialists have proved the blend bowl is here to stay.
Hello Harry
Hello Lilydale. It’s Harry. And he’s wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet (thanks for the intro Adele, we’ll take it from here).
Adina Hotel
What is it about the word ‘loft’? It instantly makes any space sound at least 25% better.
Beneath Driver Lane
Owner Hamish Goonetilleke was sure of one thing, Beneath Driver Lane wasn’t going to be one of those melancholy, stare-deep-into-your-glass type blues bars. This place was going to ROCK.
Fenton & Fenton
Let’s get real; Fenton & Fenton is without a doubt a furniture and homewares mecca. It’s like walking into your dreams, you know the ones you have of your house featuring on the cover of Vogue Living? (no? that’s just us?!).
Uncle Tetsu | Swanston Street
Next time you’re walking up Swanston St, you might notice a bit of a scrimmage. This isn’t the queue for a new iPhone. It’s a bunch of hungry cheesecake enthusiasts, standing in line to score an Uncle Tetsu Japanese cheesecake.
St Moritz
Don’t get mixed up with the alpine village in Switzerland—St Moritz is a new St Kilda eatery, inspired by the iconic St Moritz Ice Rink.
Hungry Bear
Melbourne pizza tends to come in two speeds: cheap and cheesy or wood-fired, thin-based and topped with delicate, seasonal deliciousness. One style isn’t necessarily better than the other, just like apples aren’t inherently better than oranges (who are we kidding—apples leave oranges for dead).
Wickens At The Royal Mail Hotel
Dunkeld's fine dining Mecca just got a little bit fancier. Welcome to Wickens At The Royal Mail, the latest in pinkies-out regional gastronomy.
Pixel Bar & Cafe
Ever dipped your hand into a bowl of nachos, reached for the PS4 controller and had it brutally slapped away? You monster. But hey, now you can dip and pick…We found a new bar that's combining your love of jaffles and booze with your love of pwning n00bs.
Mozambique
Mozambique Bar & Grill is the culinary fusion you didn’t know you needed. This little baby is the perfect addition to Sandringham, bringing something different to your lips (and hips)...and just in time for summer.
