Oh how we love potatoes. The best things in life are made from this humble vege: fries, gnocchi, crisps… even vodka! The poor tattie often comes under a lot of heat for its carb content but to this we say, “screw you, haterz!” You’ve gotta be kidding yourself if you actually think cauliflower mash tastes better than potato mash.
In recent times, the potato has taken a different form in Auckland-town. We’re talking potato skins. These crispy treats are bringing joy to carb-loving folk far and wide and so to share the love, we’ve rounded up the best places to get your potato skin fix in Auckland.
Leading the potato skin pack is Federal Street’s Depot Eatery. These bad boys have gained a cult following for their crispy deliciousness. Boasting a perfect skin-to-potato ratio, these skins are not too skinny and not too thick. They are fried to perfection and then topped with slices of Kingsmeade manchego Spanish-style cheese and porcini salt.
Half Moon Bay
Potato skin’ing up the Eastern suburbs is Grangers. The waterfront restaurant serves their skins in epic style. Think crunchy chunks of tatties sprinkled generously with parmesan, seasoned with porcini salt and flavoured with truffle oil. Dip these in aioli sauce and you’ll be away laughing. No trip to Grangers is complete without a serve of these tasty delights.
Newmarket, Ponsonby, Takapuna
It’s a well-known fact you can’t eat a burger without a side of starchy goodness. Whatever you’re in to, Burger Burger has your back. Here you’ll find shoestring fries, kumara chips and—you guessed it—potato skins! Served with truffle aioli, we suggest you enjoy the latter with your next burger fix. A lot of potatoes were harmed in the making of this dish—the plate is seriously stacked high.
The Glass Goose
If you like your cocktail with a side of potato skins, look no further than The Glass Goose. These skins must be made from some big ass potatoes—they’re huuuge! They’re cooked in duck fat (yum!) and flavoured with garlic and rosemary. These delish treats are perfectly paired with a serve of aioli sauce. On ya, Glass Goose!
Nobody knows potatoes better than the Irish, so it’s no surprise The Claddagh Irish pub does superb potato skins. The friendly folk hand-cut Agria potatoes (those are the yum ones) into chunky chips and then serve them with bacon, cheese and a massive dollop of sour cream. There’s nothing small about this “small plate” dish. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya.
