Ponsonby’s newest restaurant transforms everything we thought we knew about Indian cuisine.

Meet Épicer, the bright new space, home to some of the most innovative eats in town. Replacing Bolliwood, the fit out has the venue unrecognisable with hues of turquoise, chandeliers and features portraits showcasing modern Indian culture throughout. The main dining area at the ground level accommodates for à la carte dining, while the upstairs serves as a lounge, inviting guests to sit back and relax with a cocktail in hand and tapas flowing.

’Épicer’, the French term for spices, is brought to us by owner Aditya Sudan and chef Manjunath Mural, whose previous venture earned consecutive Michelin Star. Following old Indian saying ‘the guest is god’, with a step inside you’ll find that the friendly team go above and beyond to ensure your experience is unlike any other.

"Our aim is to serve modern, supreme quality Indian food as nobody has seen before," says Aditya.

“The cuisine is so much more than curry, we hope to showcase how accessible it really is," adds Chef Manjunath.

Described as modern Indian fare with a ‘light french kiss’ by Chef Manjunath, each item of the sprawling menu is a masterpiece in itself.

Our top pick is the flaming slow-cooked lamb chop Kashmiri. The tender single bone lamb chops are smothered in home-made garam masala, coriander and fennel and served on a sizzling hot plate. To ensure an extra zing, the dish is flamed on arrival to your table. It’s lit—literally.

If you’re a sucker for pork belly, look no further than the Miramar pork vindaloo. A sprawling dish served alongside sous vide, Goan vindaloo and topped with rock salt, you’re going to want to have your camera at the ready as your server sets the pork alight resulting in the ultimate crunch.

One not to miss is the Lobster Mangalorean gassi.  Boasting a pan-seared lobster doused in gassi sauce with mustard seed and served with green chillies, it’s a seafood-lovers dream come true.

Impressed? Just wait till you give their cocktails a try. Award-winning bartender Mohit Sharma has crafted the offering inspired by the streets of India, each with their own unique twist.
Our top pick is the ‘think out of the box’.  With golden rum, pepper, honey water and the aroma of cinnamon, the drink comes served atop a box containing Indian gooseberries. If you’re getting behind the wheel, the ‘love is in the air’ mocktail features a blend of Seedlip, passionfruit, cranberry juice, lime and soda garnished with gold-coated pomegranate seeds.

With a little something for everyone, you’ll find Épicer is an unforgettable experience your tastebuds won't be forgetting anytime soon.
