The neon makeup trend has been knocking around for a few seasons now, and it shows no sign of fading. And while the overarching rebellious nostalgia of 90's glitter shadows and vinyl lips are the becoming new norm, bold colour and glassy gloss is getting a futuristic overhaul.

Shimmering silvers, flashes of neon accessories and holographic highlighters are refining our palettes and these three fashion mavericks are shifting our obsession into second gear.

Rina Sawayama

During her recent US tour, Japanese-born UK-raised pop and R&B artist Rina Sawayama was seen backstage awash with smudged neon liners and dappled silver body paint across her brow. Sawayama’s look defiantly challenges standardised beauty conventions, whether it in her performances or her off-duty style, and has been vocal on kawaii and animee culture in Japan and how it can objectify and infantilize young women, a rebellious complexity which she taps into whenever she performs.

Bella Hadid At Dior Homme Show

Arriving at the 2019 Dior Homme show in head-to-toe menswear straight from the runway, Bella Hadid was captured flashing a hue of neon pink in her hair, paired with gloss lips and halo glow highlighter. A nod to the show, which featured futuristic neon and strobe lighting, 3D animation and gender ambiguous looks, Hadid’s look was anything but coincidental.

Naomi Campbell for Nars

Fronting her first ever beauty campaign, Naomi Campbell has just been announced as the new face of Nars Cosmetics. With only the first few images released so far for the Radiance Repowered range, the full line is currently under wraps until it drops in 2019. What we do know, however, is that the line will feature foundation shade extensions, new shadows and an all important Super Radiant Booster. All eyes are firmly on Campbell’s camp.
