Do you know what people don’t tell you when you first get pregnant? That nine months later, not only do you leave hospital with a brand new tiny baby, you also leave hospital with your skin a hot mess.
Not only are preggo women more prone to getting pigmentation while up the duff (hi hormones!), the lack of sleep, crazy eating habits (maybe just me) and too much coffee (again, maybe just me) in those early newborn days can take a real toll on your skin, Ahh motherhood, the gift that keeps on giving!
So when skin whisperer (and all-round legend) Kim Tran from La Belle Peau told me about a treatment that could help undo the damage of a) carrying around a watermelon for nine months and b) surviving on veeeery little sleep, I could not run over to her North Perth clinic fast enough. And by run, I mean walk briskly because #hellopelvicfloor.
Basically, Clear + Brilliant is a non-invasive procedure that improves your skin's tone and texture, minimising the look of pores, and giving your complexion an all-over glow. Obviously you don’t have to have just given birth to a small human to benefit from this treatment—it’s a real godsend for anyone who is struggling with their skin.
Three sessions are recommended, but results can be seen after just one and unlike other lasers, there is no downtime. Yessss thankyou very much, gimme now please.
So How Does It Work?
The treatment is performed using a laser device with a small roller attachment. The attachment is outfitted with tiny plastic bumps that push into the skin and allow the laser to make tiny injuries to the skin. It sounds a bit complicated I know, but it’s really just about replacing damaged skin with healthy, younger-looking tissue. Plus, all you really need to know is that stimulates the production of collagen, improves circulation, increases hydration, promotes healing and calms inflammation. Basically, it exists to make your skin look younger, plumper and glowy-er. Hello game-changer.
How It Goes Down
Starting with the centre of my forehead, Kim starts by pressing a rollerball against my skin. The rollerball has Intelligent Optical Tracking, which is a fancy way of saying that it ensures energy is safely and precisely applied. Then comes the Clear + Brilliant laser, which Kim glides all over my face from forehead to chin.
Each session lasts about 20 minutes, which is handy because it’s not exactly a walk in the park. Let’s just say I was full of bravado when I walked in (‘I just pushed out a baby’, ‘I am woman hear me roar!’ etc etc) and five minutes in, I was whimpering to Kim to give me a 30 second break. It’s not unbearable, but it does feels like a whole lot of hot zaps on your face (note to self, if you think about how each zap is encouraging collagen production, it’ll make you feel better—promise). My face felt really warm throughout the treatment and some parts of the face hurt more than others (nose and hair line, eek) but honestly, it’s over before you know it.
What Happens After
I was expecting my skin to be bright red for the rest of the day, but it turns out it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. My face did look a bit red—kind of like I had sunburn—but immediately my pores looked smaller and my skin tone seemed more even. Within two hours, my face was back to its normal shade and I went on with my day as usual. For the next five days, my skin felt really rough and sandpaper-y but by day five, all that rough skin was gone and my skin texture and tone was innnnncredible.
Was It Worth It?
God yes! Even though I feel like I’m 107 at the moment (ahh sleep, when will we meet again old friend?), I most definitely don’t want to look like it. I was lucky enough to do a full course of three treatments and after each appointment my skin was noticeably brighter, more plump and dewy. Plus the cumulative effect meant I really noticed that it reduced my pesky pregnancy pigmentation. It’s not the cheapest treatment going around (a single treatment is $350), but if you’ve got something special coming up or if you just want to improve your skin quality without any downtime, Clear+ Brilliant really is an amazing option.
