The Foodie’s Guide To The Perth Royal Show

The Perth Royal Show is famous for a few things—sideshow alley, fluffy farm animals and all of the showbags being the main points of interest.

Food hasn’t exactly been a big drawcard in the past, unless you’ve been craving some fairy floss or waiting patiently for that Bertie Beetle showbag. But 2016 is the year that all this changes, thanks to the addition of the Royal Agricultural Society of WA’s new food initiative, Taste WA as well as a couple of trusty faves like the WA Dairy Pavilion and the IGA Fresh From WA Pavilion. Luckily for you, we’ve got four tickets plus an exclusive cooking experience with one of the Taste WA chefs live on stage in the Taste WA pavilion to give away so make sure you enter the comp below!

Taste WA will be a hub of WA’s best food—from Mt Barker Free Range chicken, cheese and beef to chocolate and gelato. There will also be live music, food conversations with some of WA’s top chefs and live comedy every night.

So, what should you be getting excited about? Let’s just say our first stop is going to be the savoury station which will be chock-full WA cheeses and olives from Harvey Cheese and Mundella, as well as plenty of delicious fresh salads so you can get your greens in. Just remember to pace yourself here, there’s plenty more to come!

Once you’ve had your fill of cheese, grab a glass of wine or a craft beer and move right along to the ribs & sliders station to gorge on the most tender meat from Harvey Beef.  If you’re more into seafood, the fish & chips station will be calling your name, with panko and lemon myrtle crumbed Mandurah mullet and Southern Forests Premium fries.

For the chicken fans out there, the chicken and cheese kranskies, smokey BBQ chicken wings and yakitori chicken from the legends at Mt Barker Chicken will be right up your alley.

We’ve got a feeling you might have a hankering for something sweet after all that so head to the dessert station for some of the best chocolate you’ll ever eat from Nakamura Chocolates and Margaret River Chocolate Factory, as well as ice cream and gelato or scones with jam and cream if you’re feeling a bit fancy!

The WA Dairy Pavilion has always been at the top of my hit list in the past and this year will be no different. Take a walk down LEGENDAIRY Lane and try your hand at cheese making. After you’ve met the artisanal cheese makers of WA, grab a camembert and caramelised onion toastie (or a standard cheese one for the less adventurous), and if you’re more of a sweet tooth, there’s chocolate, fudge, ice creams, yoghurt and giant milkshakes on offer!

The IGA Fresh From WA Pavilion will be hosting cooking demonstrations and offering up plenty of samples showcasing gourmet spices, a variety of meat, cheese and West Australian wine. If you can make it down on 29 or 30 September to catch former Masterchef contestant Jessica Arnott’s cheese masterclass, you won’t be disappointed!

While you’re wandering around the showgrounds you’ll notice it’s not all hot chips and fairy floss this year. Keep an eye out for Amore Gelato who dish up some of the creamiest gelato you’ll ever taste, or head to Coco Lycious for some Cocowhip. Frank’s Furts will also be around to fulfil your craving for freakin’ delicious homemade sausages—all made with WA produce of course—and Bullseye Feral Meats will be selling their ridiculously tasty Black Angus jerky.
