It’s true, guys. Next Australia Day you’re gonna have to listen to bands whose names you actually know. The horror. Triple J just announced they’re moving the Hottest 100 countdown to a less controversial date.

Next year’s countdown is being moved to 27 January, with the losers songs that just missed out being played on Sunday 28 January. It comes as the station acknowledges the “increasing debate” around January 26 and its significance for Indigenous Australians.

“In recent years the Hottest 100 has become a symbol in the debate about Australia Day,” the station said. “The Hottest 100 wasn’t created as an Australia Day Celebration. It was created to celebrate your favourite songs of the past year.”

The move is in line with a survey Triple J conducted earlier in the year, asking its listeners if they would care if the date was moved. Most didn’t.

Personally, we'll always think of Horses as the greatest Aussie song of all time. But that's just us.
