There’s no doubt COVID-19 has changed the world in so many ways. The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) has described the pandemic as a “global health crisis without precedent in living memory” and one that has triggered the most severe economic recession since the Great Depression. You can check out what a recession could mean for Australia right here.
Because of this, inconceivable damage has been caused to people’s health, jobs and wellbeing; almost 600,000 Australians lost their jobs due to COVID-19 in April of this year, forcing many of us to rethink our careers for the future. As shown in a new report from ING called ING Future Focus, which was commissioned by the multinational bank and conducted by YouGov in April of this year, at least a third of Aussies are keen to look for a new job post-pandemic.
The report highlights that the top in-demand skills are more “right-brain” focused including innovation and creativity, storytelling, virtual leadership (thanks to a digital migration for many businesses towards Slack and Zoom), emotional intelligence and, something that definitely won’t come as a shock, adaptability.
It also paints a pretty detailed picture of what the workforce of “tomorrow” looks like, keeping in mind the widespread and deep impact of COVID-19. Eco companies are set to lead the way with sustainability, renewable energy and carbon neutrality at the forefront of a new economy, home offices will most definitely be the norm and workplaces will also hit the wellbeing train hard, implementing more holistic approaches to mental health with greater access to online therapy, calming apps and wellbeing spaces.
