If 2018 was the year of true-crime and 2019 was the year of horror, 2020 has been the penultimate year where entertainment has thrown itself into the deep-end of documentary-making.

There’s been a thirst for deeper storytelling, whether it’s about a stranger-than-fiction cult personality in the world of big cat owners, a wrongful conviction which led to a miscarriage of justice or the historical prejudices and injustices endured by First Nations people in Australia. Now, Disney+ is about to drop a documentary series that will single-handedly round up the undeniable cultural impact of one of the world’s biggest publishers. We’re talking about Marvel Comics.

The documentary is set to be an anthology series called Marvel 616 (yes, that’s a play on the fictional universe of  Earth-616 which most of Marvel’s comics take place) and each episode will be like a mini-documentary feature, helmed by a unique filmmaker to explore the intersections of storytelling, pop culture, and fandom within the Marvel Universe.

Films in this anthology series will cover topics including Marvel’s world-spanning artists, the trailblazing women of Marvel Comics, discovering the “forgotten” characters of Marvel, and a whole heap more. To give you a taste, Higher, Further, Faster is directed by actor/director Gillian Jacobs and will shine a light on the women behind Marvel Comics and how they found ways to tell stories of representation and inclusion (including the creators behind Marvel’s first Muslim superhero Kamala Khan).

There’s no hard release date for when all episodes for Marvel 616 are expected to drop on Disney+ but we’re thinking it could be just in time to celebrate Marvel’s 80th birthday on August 31. We’ll keep you posted.

And here are all the best movies to watch on Disney+ right now.
