The infiltration of decent burger joints over the last few years means two things: one, the quality has gotten better and better. Two, we’ve gone up a dress size (or two). But hey, the latter is only our own fault—we certainly can’t resist a great burger (or two). So, when we came across inner-city new opening, Black Dog Burger, we adorned our stretchy-pants and swiftly made our way there.
Attached to The Empire, Black Dog has taken a simple stance when it comes to their offerings. In fact, there’s only four burger options to choose from, with a fifth option making its inaugural appearance this week.
Beef lovers—rejoice. Here, fresh every morning, prime slabs of New Zealand Sirloin steak are ground into mince and formed into generous, juicy patties. Want your patty blue (i.e still mooing)? They’ll do that for you, along with any other requests—medium-rare, medium, and so on. Please don’t order well done though, or we can’t be friends.
If you’re after something classic, try the Black Dog Cheese—glorious patties with the traditional accompaniments of mustard, ketchup, cheese and pickles. Step it up a notch with the addition of their ‘secret sauce’ in the Black Dog Burger, and double-up on meat with the Black Dog Deluxe that features crispy bacon.
If you’re a tad adverse to beef, there’s a super satisfying chicken burger which is teamed with bacon and that moreish special sauce and cheese. And, their newest addition is a mighty fine slow-cooked pulled pork burger complete with house slaw, and lashing of homemade BBQ sauce. Each creation is sandwiched between a custom-made egg-washed bun, and is soft and bouncy with just the right amount of denseness. And, of course, a burger isn’t quite right without a side of fries. Here they’re shoestring, cooked to perfection and dusted with just the right amount of salt.
Wash it all down with one of their two craft beers… You guessed it—Black Dog Beer—and you’ll be suitably happy, we can promise you that. And, if you consider yourself to be a bit of a beer connoisseur, then you’ll appreciate this brew originates from the windy capital and is undeniably tasty.
So sit back in their simple dining room and watch the chefs work their magic thanks to the open kitchen that dominates the back wall. Oh, and did we mention you can get a burger, fries and beer for the measly amount of $15? We know, we know—race you there.
