Watch out, Ponsonby! MR TOMS flings open its doors tomorrow and is set to become the coolest kid on the block—and one of the best bars in Auckland—on the sunny side of Ponsonby Road, might we add.
It’s high time a relaxed, no-nonsense bar and eatery came to town—and MR TOMS is just that. Owned by Future Bars lads, James Ace, Bert Haines and Jase Whalley, MR TOMS was born from a goal of filling Auckland’s bellies with rustic, honest food, while bringing back good ol’ fashioned hospitality in a classic and hip space, thanks to Whalley's inspo. Not a snooty attitude or meticulous cutlery set up in sight.
MR TOMS is housed in the former United Kitchen and Bar 151 space on Ponsonby Road, where head chef Tom Williamson works his culinary magic. Tom, who has worn hats at The Oyster Inn and Ebisu, gained quite the fan club at United Kitchen, so it made sense to Tom and the Future Bars guys to carry a similar menu over to MR TOMS.
Gorgeously soft Il Casaro burrata is the star of the small plates, with tempura courgette flowers, lamb meat balls, and a prawn, chorizo and tomato dish coming in close joint second. All the ingredients are artisan and locally sourced where possible, including the simple, fresh pizza toppings—prosciutto, rocket and feta, prawn, sundried tomato and basil, and the holy grail of all pizzas—smoked mushroom, truffle and bocconcini. Dayum.
Their salads are also brilliant. Who knew toasted quinoa worked so well with dukkah, goats cheese and berries? Or that grilled octopus, white beans and chorizo would become our new fave summer salad?
These delicious dishes can be eaten (preferably alongside a Mai Tai Twist) on the handcrafted bar leaners, or down in the dining room.
MR TOMS takes reservations, is great for groups and kids, and will make sure your private function is a cracker. As the MR TOMS crew say, this new bar and eatery is “simple things, done well”, and we couldn’t agree more.
