Music On A Monday | David August Courtyard Day Party

By Adam Gerrard - 11 Nov 2013

August is somewhat of a musical prodigy. He was classically trained from age five and started producing dance music at just 17.  It's obvious he has more than just technical skill and music knowledge as his productions typically contain that which one cannot learn from a book and, painfully, is also all too often missing from dance music — soul.

His debut album Times is the best exhibit of this. It combines soulful vocals with strings, piano and electronic rhythms to create a rare dance music album that doesn't get boring when listening from start to finish.

If one had to compare him to his contemporaries, August sits somewhere in between Nicolas Jaar and James Blake. He's more dance-floor-oriented than Blake, but uses his voice in an effect-heavy style like Jaar. At the same time, August employs traditional musical structures more often than Jaar. Clear as mud?

The point is, if you like James Blake and Nicolas Jaar, you will like August.

His live shows are meant to be incredible, so to see him on a Sunday afternoon for only $15 is a steal. It's a small venue so make sure you grab your tickets early to avoid missing out.
