5 Things To Make This May Day Long Weekend Epic

By Brooke Darling - 29 Apr 2016

This never happens, like EVER (okay, expect perhaps at Christmas). Two long weekends in a row? We can hardly contain our excitement either!

Otherwise known as Labour Day, this holiday is all about celebrating the hard-working folk of our great land (that’s us!) so use the three-day weekend as you will. Not sure where to start? Here’s five epic events popping up this weekend that are sure to make your May Day long weekend one to remember.

GLOW Festival of Lights | Saturday, April 30

Sydney might have Vivid, but us lucky Gold Coasters have our very own festival of lights, GLOW, taking over the Arts Centre Gold Coast and the adjoining Evandale Parklands for one night only. With over 10,000 happy peeps in attendance, expect laser shows, interactive stations, illuminated art installations, virtual reality displays, film screenings, live music, and a street food precinct—guaranteeing total sensory overload. Our mates at Cambus Wallace will even be hosting a pop-up bar at the event, so hit them up for a few frosties. Lastly, don’t forget your white or fluro outfit, so you too can glow under the black lights. It’ll bring back memories of those crazy clubbing days when glow sticks were your fave accessory (no, just us?).

When: 5—10pm
Where: Evandale Parklands, Bundall

Food Truck and Indie Night Markets | Saturday, April 30

Another cool initiative by the creative folk at Gold Coast Design Collective, this rad pop-up event is taking place under lights beside the Benowa Tavern. They’ve got a whole host of fun stuff organised including designer market stalls, tons of vintage clothing racks (we knew you’d like that!), live bands, licensed bar, and a bunch of tasty food trucks driving in from across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Pair it with a visit to the GLOW Festival nearby, and you’ve got yourself an action-packed Saturday night out.

When: 3—9pm
Where: Benowa Tavern, 117 Ashmore Road, Benowa

Byron Bay International Fashion Festival | Saturday, May 1

Okay… so this one will require you jumping in the car and missioning across the border to our adopted second home, Byron Bay. If you’re a girl or guy with a penchant for fashionable threads, it’ll be totally worth it. Held at the gorgeous Elements of Byron Resort, the Byron Bay International Fashion Festival has a full schedule of runway shows, designer expo markets featuring local creatives, fashion photography displays, fashion films, make-up demonstrations, and a luxe after party. Some events are open to the general public, others require tickets, so jump over to the website before they’re all snapped up.

When: 10am—midnight
Where: Elements of Byron, 144 Bayshore Drive, Byron Bay

Stone & Wood’s Festival of the Stone Tour | Sunday, May 1

Pitch in to clean up our beloved beaches alongside the travellin’ Clean Coast Collective (CCC) crew, this Sunday, May 1 as part of the Festival of the Stone Tour. Then, once you’ve done your good deed of the day, there’s an epic Clean Up After Party with your name all over it taking place at Miami Beach Surf Club. Hosted by Stone & Wood, all profits from beer sales will be going straight back into the CCC, which means you can continue to help the environment. All. Night. Long. Definitely one of the best feel-good things to do on the Gold Coast this long weekend.

When: Clean up 2pm, after party at 4pm
Where: Miami Beach Surf Club, Miami

Sundays at Justin’s | Sunday, May 1

As if our fave rooftop bar couldn’t get any hotter, Justin Lane has recently introduced live DJ Sunday Sessions. This weekend the man bringing the beats is DJ Daniel Mada, so grab your squad, your Sunday glad rags, and kick back to smooth sounds with a sexy cocktail or three. #prayforsunshine

When: Live DJ from 2—7pm
Where: 1708—1710 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads

Got your finger on the pulse? Know of any other awesome things to do on the Gold Coast this long weekend? Tell us in the comments!
