Not that we’re complaining ‘cause winter 2016 was pretty epic and the changing seasons mean our chapped, pasty white skin will soon be a distant memory. Seriously though, where has this year gone?
With that in mind, you don’t want this month passing you by without having added any awesome adventures to the memory bank. So, we’ve wadded through the interwebs to bring you our pick of the best things to do on the Gold Coast this September. Diaries at the ready, folks!
Gold Coast Festival of Lights | Throughout September
Gold Coast’s answer to Sydney’s Vivid, splashed across Broadwater Parklands through the month of September is an illuminated celebration of Chinese culture in the form of 100 or so various light installations. Cool! Gold Coast Festival of Lights springs to life each night come sundown and will be smattered with cultural performances, traditional handicraft displays, and Chinese street food stalls. Entry tickets are $22 for adults and $14 for kids 15 and under. Cameras at the ready, peeps!

Spring Fling by StartUp Creative | Thursday, September 1
Having finally had the privilege of sitting in on a quality pep talk with Kaylene Langford, we can confirm this home-grown pocket rocket is definitely worth seeking out if you’re looking to ditch the daily grind. In September, StartUp Creative is teaming up with The Village Markets to host Spring Fling, a networking evening at 19 Karen Artspace. With a focus on empowerment and the Mumpreneur movement—mothers eager to mold a flexible career that embraces their creative passions rather than diving back into the corporate 9 to 5. Listen to stories from some of The Village Market’s most successful exports and get inspired to take the startup plunge.

Saltfest Surf Festival | Saturday, September 3
Celebrating our deeply-engrained surf culture over one massive Saturday is the second annual Saltfest. Washing over Coolangatta’s seaside esplanade, Saltfest is certain to attract a whole host of cool peeps. There’ll be local musos serenading, free yoga sessions with Lululemon Athletica, surf photography, live artists creating ocean scape works of art before your eyes, surfboard shaper and skate displays, environmental group exhibits and spokespeople, surf-inspired market stalls (bring yo’ cash!), and a host of foodie stalls and trucks to satisfy your rumbling tummies. Kicking off between 10am and 4pm, Saltfest is shaping up to be one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast in September.

Vogue Fair at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre | Thursday, September 8
Pacific Fair’s incredible expansions are almost complete, with mega brands such as Sephora, TopShop, H&M, Zara, Tiffanys, Lululemon, Aje, Manning Cartel, and oh-so much more now with a permanent home on the Gold Coast. Pacific Fair is celebrating the best way they know how, collaborating with fashion powerhouse Vogue Australia on the magazine’s first major Queensland shopping event (take that, Brisbane!). The stellar shopping fiesta kicks off at 5pm and you must check out the lengthy list of gifts, discounts, and pop-up events they’re dishing out to shopaholics in attendance. Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief AKA fashion goddess, Edwina McCann will open the event, with flowing bubbles, in-store activities, exclusive retail offers, and fashion parades to continue through until 9pm. Credit cards at the ready!
SWELL Sculpture Festival | Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 18
One of our fave events of the year is returning to Currumbin this month, ‘cause who doesn’t love an excuse to act all cultured and shiz with your toes firmly wriggled in the sand? Heralded as the state’s largest outdoor art exhibition, the 14th annual SWELL Sculpture Festival promises to be better than ever with 50 intriguing and interactive art installations peppered along Currumbin’s foreshore. Wander around at your leisure or join guided twilight walks, artist talks, yoga sessions, and listen to live music. Prepare for your Insta feeds to be flooded with sunrise, sunset, and after dark images from every angle… we know we’ll be guilty!

Inside Out at Brickworks Centre | Sunday, September 11
Spring has sprung, and Brickworks Centre is embracing the sunny weather with the return of its popular lifestyle fest, Inside Out. Taking over the Southport retail complex, existing vendors will be turning it on and joined by an all-day program of free family-friendly activities including live music, cooking demos, fashion shows, fitness sessions, plus pop-up bars, food stalls, and a live mural painting by the insanely talented duo, Frank and Mimi. Sounds like a neat way to round out the weekend!

The 4217 Markets | Saturday, September 17
Just when you thought the Coast’s market scene was as hot as we could handle, along comes a fab new local creative and food purveyor market, hosted by Surfers Paradise’s The 4217 complex. Twenty-five local artisans selling wares from children’s clothing, fashion, art, to baked goods will pop up between 9am and 1pm. Operating alongside existing The 4217 vendors such as Paradox Coffee Roasters, Brooklyn Depot, CHA Tea, and Salt Meats Cheese who’ll be open for eats, drinks, and special workshops to add to the colourful vibe.

Rooftop Street Food Party | Friday, September 23
Apparently you guys loved this inaugural event so much, it’s already back for round two. GC Design Collective is again popping up on Miami’s Shark Bar rooftop! Free to enter, this mega evening event is on between 4pm and 9pm, with a loaded line up of street food stalls, live tunes, craft beer flowing, and retro games. See you there!

Set Your GPS for Palm Beach | Dates to be announced
Whispers had been circulating wildly for months, so we got on the phone and tried to make heads and tails of all the new foodie developments in the pipeline for Palm Beach. It seems you guys were just as excited as we were upon sharing the news and the buzz is just beginning for one of our fave beachside suburbs. While dates are still pending, September is going to be one hell of an exciting month for new openings in the 4221 area, so keep your eyes peeled on Metropolist for everything you need to know.
