As much as we want to pass the colder months curled up in front of the fire with a hot chocolate in hand, rocking the hell out of our new Peter Alexander onesie, at some stage we’re probably going to have to leave the house. Winter brings with it the particularly tricky task of staying warm while looking stylish AF, because compromise is for suckers.
If you want to survive the colder months while looking fierce with little-to-no effort (we got out of or toasty warm bed this morning, what more do you want?!), all you need is a few, quality essentials. Welcome to our head-to-toe winter street style guide.
Note: Mid season sales are everywhere at the moment. Check your spam folders, people. This is not a drill!
#1 Wool Fedora
Keeping your head warm this winter doesn’t have to come at the cost of fashun. The Nightfall Wool Fedora from Lack of Color is the perfect accessory to finish off any outfit with style (it’s also a great way to cover up the fact you haven’t washed your hair in several days, because...winter).
Winter dressing is all about layering up—when the temperature drops outside people overcompensate by blasting the heater, leaving you feeling like you’ve just stepped into the fiery depths of hell. Basic cotton tops like the Cotton On Lysa Top are an absolute must.
#3 All The Knits
We just love a beautiful knit, which is lucky because they are an absolute essential for every winter wardrobe—you can wear your bright pink Kathmandu fleece jumper to a bar if you really want, but people will look at you funny, we checked. Add a splash of colour with the Floral Embroidered Knit from French Connection.
#4 Ankle Boots
Whether you’re pairing them with jeans, or a dress and tights, you’re gonna look chic AF in your ankle boots. Nothing’s worse than saying goodbye to a beautiful pair of boots, so make sure you get some waterproofing spray all up in there for longevity. To celebrate Van Gogh and the Seasons, Wittner Shoes paired up with (mind the pun) the NGV to bring you their Hiver—it’s french for winter—Winter Boot.
#5 Good Quality Winter Coat
Despite good coats costing around two weeks’ rent, they’re definitely worth the investment (you’ll wear them almost every day and will last you years if you take care of them). But we understand that paying for food is also an essential for winter, so if you’re not quite ready to make the giant leap, the super versatile Wool Bomber Jacket from Seed will do quite nicely.
#6 Denim For Days
Jeans are the real MVP of the winter wardrobe, they just go with everything and are appropriate almost anywhere (just not under a skirt—that hasn’t been cool since the early 2000s). For our ultimate guide to denim on any budget, check out our Pov to Posh denim roundup.
#7 Pom Pom Scarf
Unless you want to go full Steve Jobs and wear a turtleneck every single day #uniform, you’re gonna need something to keep your neck cosy and warm—a scarf perhaps? If you’re not wearing pom poms you’re not doing winter right, which is why we’re just loving the Winter Pom Pom Scarf from Witchery.
#8 Over The Knee Boots
#9 Sexy Lingerie
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t heat things up a little in the bedroom. Just turn the electric blanket up to three and you’re good to go. If you’re hoping to get a little more figurative, the Rosemary Bralette and Sabrina Thong Set from Hopeless Lingerie is a winner.
#10 Easy-To-Wear Dress
It might be freezing out, but at some stage you’re gonna get sick of drinking at home and want to venture out to a bar. When the effort of taking off your trackies seems all too much, a cute dress is perfect for putting in the minimum amount of effort that’s required to be deemed acceptable to society. Match it with an over-the-knee boot and you won’t even need to shave your legs #lifehack. If our instagram feeds are anything to go by, velvet is so hot right now, so why not just cut to the chase and wrap yourself in it? The Velvet Wrap Dress from Dotti is a great place to start.
