Summer’s officially ditched the party but we still have a couple of months left until winter wraps its crusty claws around our black-clad Melbourne bods, which means there’s still a little time to hurl a few balls down the green, pint in hand.

Here’s where you can sink beers and play barefoot bowls in Melbourne.

City Of Melbourne Bowls Club Inc.

Flagstaff Gardens, CBD

For only $200 a rink, you can bag yourself three hours of bowling fun at the City Of Melbourne Bowls Club in Flagstaff Gardens. They’ll even throw in bowls, a mat, a jack and a quick demo if you’re a bit rusty. Rinks are available seven days a week, from 10am to 10pm on weekdays and 12pm to 10pm on weekends. To top it all off you can hire one of their on-site barbecues and even indulge in a G&T or three.

The fun never stops at Brunswick Bowling Club where there’s a social rink available basically aaaaall day, errrrrrday. These guys pride themselves on their pure natural grass surfaces that make you feel like you’re walking on clouds. If that’s not enough, there’s also a pool table, a pinball machine, a barbecue for hire and a ripper atmosphere ripe for some arvo fun.

For only 20 bucks per person, you can hire a rink at the Port Melbourne Bowling Club. Nice and close to the city centre, this is a fab hot spot for a bit of afternoon bowling, plus you’ll be surrounded by pros who have a lotta hot tips to give.

Fitzroy Victoria Bowling & Sports Club

For groups under 6, two hours of barefoot bowls will only set you back a cool 15 bucks a head ($150 per lane for bigger groups). The rinks are open seven days a week between 10am and 10pm, and you can even set up a bar tab if you want ‘future you’ to worry about paying rent.

Barefoot bowls is basically available around the clock at Melbourne Bowling Club because the crew of bloody legends there always ensure they have a spare green free, even when it’s deep into the comp season. Luckily for your feet, their greens are all-natural, plus their bar is always open and stacked with a YUGE selection drinks. If stuffing your cob is more your style, then you can also hire a barbeque and double park a couple of snags in your greasy mitts in between bowls. There’s also a pool table and a pinball machine!

For a tidy 20 bucks a head, one of the St Kilda Sports Club bowling rinks could be all yours. Throw in an extra 30 and you could be firing up one of their on-site barbecues while you’re at it. There’s also a variety of bowling packages to choose from (if you’re hard-pressed to find a last-minute wedding venue), plus on-site bar. Because this is Australia.

Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club


If their ultra-modern website it anything to go by, you’re in for an absolute treat at the Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club. This laid-back epicentre of social activity is a melting pot of beers, bowls and bloody good times. Boasting the cheapest rate of this list, at only $10 a head for groups of five people or less, lobbing a might flipper down the rink is the cheapest excuse to ditch family lunch you can have asked for.
