It's a big call but breakfast could possibly be our favourite meal of the day, here at The Urban List. Nothing makes us happier than porridge, eggs on toast, smashed avo, fried bacon….well, you get the picture. Come winter, our love of breakfast multiplies thanks in part to the hearty dishes Melbourne's café scene, errr, dishes out during the colder months. Cozying up with a tummy-pleasing, deliciously tasting brekkie? Yes please!
We known Urban Listers always want in on the breakfast action so, without further ado, here are 9 of the best winter breakfasts…
TURKISH POACHED EGGS AT OASIS BAKERY | MURRUMBEENA
Putting a spin on your standard breakfast menu is Oasis Bakery in Murrumbeena — their Turkish Poached Eggs are easily one of the best winter breakfasts we've tried in a loooong time! The eggs are coated in dukkah and served alongside a spicy bean tajine and sumac yogurt — this is a brekky dish that'll leave you wanting more. Oasis Bakery's 'Date and Walnut Heaven' is also, surprise surprise, heavenly thanks to the house-baked date and walnut toast topped with vanilla mascarpone, Iranian fig, and organic blueberry jam. Yuuuum!
SMASHED AVO AT CROWDED HOUSE | WILLIAMSTOWN
It's no secret we are in love (aka OBSESSED) with smashed avo at The Urban List — we can't get enough of that creamy avo goodness! So it comes as no surprise that Crowded Houses's smashed avo makes the list of best winter breakfasts in Melbourne. What's the key to their smashed avo success? We put it down to the macadamia dukkah that's sprinkled on top — it adds the perfect finishing touch and an extra hit of flavour. The spiced smashed pumpkin is also a winner.
LA MONTAGNA AT ITALIAN CHEF | SOUTH YARRA
Not content with dishing up some of Melbourne's best Italian food, the team at Italian Chef in South Yarra also do a cracker winter breakfast — their 'La Montagna' is too good not to try! Italian Chef take one of our favourite foods — polenta — fry it until it's perfectly crisp and then send it on its merry way, alongside poached eggs, mixed wild mushrooms and bacon. Yeah, our tummies are rumbling too. Prefer something scrambled? The 'Il Diavoletto' — scrambled eggs with cheese, baked beans, and meatballs — is also delicious.
JAFFLES AT OSCAR COOPER | PRAHRAN
Not only a great winter breakfast option, the jaffles at Prahran's Oscar Cooper also make for an excellent hangover breakfast*. So simple, yet so well done, Oscar Cooper's jaffles come in a range of delish flavours including chicken and chives, mac 'n' cheese, tomato with basil and bocconcini, and, our favourite, the corned beef with onion jam and gruyere cheese ('scuse us while we wipe the drool from our keyboards). Whether you've had a few too many or not, these bad boys need to be on your list!
*Tried and tested MANY times…
SHAKSHUKA AT SPOUT | RIPPONLEA
If you haven't tried shakshuka as a breakfast dish, my oh my, you need to get on board! Essentially a dish of eggs poached in tomato sauce, shakshuka is something all Urban Listers need to try this winter (and beyond…) Ripponlea's Spout Café has a standout version — it's served with dukkah, grilled haloumi (oh how we adore haloumi) and just the right amount of bread to soak up all the eggy, tomatoey goodness. Try it, and prepare to be hooked.
DRUNKEN SAILOR'S BIG BREKKY AT THE GALLEON | ST KILDA
I don't know about you but here at TUL, we're a heck of a lot hungrier in winter which is why we're big fans of big breakfasts — I mean, there's nothing like a plate of eggs, bacon, and plenty of sides to fill you up when it's freezing outside! The Galleon Café in St Kilda does one of Melbourne's best with their 'Drunken Sailor's Big Brekky' featuring two eggs on toast with free range bacon, mushrooms, tomato, and spinach — truly epic and hot damn delicious!
BAKED EGGS AT PATCH | RICHMOND
New in town and already a firm TUL fave, Patch paleo café are responsible for some of the yummiest baked eggs in town. Rich and flavoursome, this dish will have you feeling toasty in no time — no wonder it makes the cut of Melbourne's top winter breakfasts! Tomato, chipotle, chorizo, and either sourdough or paleo toast makes for the perfect accompaniment — just add a Tanka juice or Code Black coffee and you're set.
TUL note: For more info, don't miss our verdict on Patch's paleo goodness.
MALAYSIAN MASSAMAN BREAKFAST POT AT GOLDEN CHILD | GLEN IRIS
Winning points for their innovative brekkie creations, Golden Child in Glen Iris has just released their new winter menu. Being the breakfast fiends that we are, we had to stop by and while there were a few dishes that took our fancy, it's the Malaysian Massaman Breakfast Pot that takes the cake. Just picture this: slow braised and oh-so-tender brisket, fried pretzels and a poached egg. Trust us, it tasted even better than what you're imagining! Other must try items are the Kaiserfleisch baked beans and the sweet potato roesti. Nom nom nommmm.
SUPER SEED PORRIDGE FROM THE COUNTER | HAWTHORN
Our list of the best winter breakfasts would never be complete without everyone's tried 'n' tried favourite, porridge. Oh-so-comforting on a dreary winter's day. Up there with Melbourne's best porridge is The Counter's super seed variety, a creamy concoction made with almond milk, chia seeds and buckinis — yup, nutritious and delicious! The finishing touch? The peppercorn and rhubabrb compote which we are positively mad about here at TUL.
