Fave 5 Melbourne Craft Beer Breweries

When we love something we really, truly LOVE something! And that’s exactly how we feel about our new relationship! Some things just go together. Like cookies and cream, Brandon and Brenda… The Urban List and MINI!

Our two families have collaborated to bring discerning readers and drivers a new fortnightly series – MINI Fave 5s. The must-try guide to Melbourne, celebrating the launch of the new MINI 5-door hatch

So, Urban Listers, clear the diary and get excited for our Fave 5s. There’s a whole year of eating, drinking and discovering to be done…

Delicious coffee. Amazing street art. World-class cocktails. Let’s be honest, Listers: Melbourne does a lot of things really well, but one that often gets overlooked in a sea of VB tinnies and imported long-necks is the local craft beer scene, which is BOOMING. There’s a tonne of local breweries in Melbourne who are turning out craft beers that beat the Americans out of the ballpark and put the Europeans to shame.

We’re not just talking peppy IPAs and pilsners either—there’s an amazing array of stouts, ales, weisse beers…So, want to know where you should be headed to for the best craft beers in Melbourne? Check out our Fave 5 Melbourne craft beer breweries. Cheers.

Mountain Goat Brewery

Mountain Goat Brewery in Richmond turns out some of the best craft beer in Melbourne if you’re looking for tasty wheat and pale ales that are the perfect refreshing pour. The Richmond craft brewery opens to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays, serving up speciality batches (rare breeds, if you will) and delicious pizzas. The perfect start to the weekend, especially if you’re looking to pick up some local ales—or their crisp Two Step cider—to keep you going through until Monday.

Temple Brewing Co.

Brunswick East

We’re tempted to crown Temple Brewing Co. as purveyors the most stylish craft beer in Melbourne—from their new-icon Bicycle beer (which, I’ll admit, I’ve bought on several occasions purely for the fact that it’s got a bike on the label…two wheels are better than four, people!) to their incredible Rye Hard IPA, every craft beer from this Brunswick East brewery is a cracker. Don’t believe me? Try the Brave New World stout, or better yet, the Brave New World stout crème brûlée that their kitchen turns out, and prepare to never look back.

As well as selling beer straight from the brewery, supplying to local venues and supporting some of the coolest events in the city, Temple Brewing Co. also run occasional brewery tours. If you’re booking in for one, tell them we say “hello!”

3 Ravens

3 Ravens craft beer brewery in Thornbury turns out some of the best traditional craft beers in Melbourne. While they don’t open their doors to the public all that often, when they do, it’s not to be missed. Their monthly tasting sessions include REALLY special one-off craft beers (single kegs, smoked styles, whiskey barrel aged brews…), and their team are currently beating the English at their own ale game, picking up the Best English Ale award at last year’s Australian International Beer Awards.

If the sound of a peat-smoked American Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels gets your heart pounding (just writing this is giving me mild palpitations), then 3 Ravens in Thornbury is the boutique Melbourne brewery for you.

Moon Dog Craft Brewery

The brewers at Abbotsford craft brewery Moon Dog make some of the most creative craft beers in Melbourne, taking inspiration from just about every flavour combo under the sun. Bloody Mary red ale? Sure thing. Watermelon infused weisse beer? Coming right up. A smoked stout that gives a good scotch a run for its money? Hell yes.

There’s also a pizza caravan on-site at this boutique brewery to keep you fed in between tastings, which is a must if you’re heading straight for their stronger batches. One for the more experimental craft beer fans amongst us, Moon Dog Craft Brewery is an absolute must if you consider discovering new beers as an extreme sport. Pick up a bottle or two of the special batches before the sell out!

Two Birds Brewing

Two Birds Brewing in Spotswood specialises in delicious flavoursome ales with the inclusion of the odd wildcard, making it one of the best craft breweries in Melbourne for stocking up on reliable craft beers that are guaranteed crowd-pleasers.

The team behind Fitzroy restaurant Rockwell & Sons mans the kitchen, meaning you’re in for some epic eats if you do pay them a visit, and the brewery tours include up to six tap tastings, making for a great afternoon or evening of learning and sipping. It’s worth nothing too that Two Birds Brewing’s corn-brewed Taco beer is one of the tastiest craft beers we’ve had in a while—perfect served ice-cold with Mexican food.

We're thrilled to partner with MINI to bring you our Fave 5 series—our fortnightly guide to the best of the best in Melbourne. From food to fashion, Campari to Crossfit, each Fave 5 edition is researched and recommended by The Urban List, and driven by the new MINI 5-Door Hatch—putting the city at your fingertips and giving you the freedom to explore it!
