A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:
When we love something we really, truly LOVE something! And that’s exactly how we feel about our new relationship! Some things just go together. Like cookies and cream, Brandon and Brenda… The Urban List and MINI!

Our two families have collaborated to bring discerning readers and drivers a new fortnightly series – MINI Fave 5s. The must-try guide to Melbourne, celebrating the launch of the new MINI 5-door hatch!

So, Urban Listers, clear the diary and get excited for our Fave 5s. There’s a whole year of eating, drinking and discovering to be done…

SO WHO'S ON OUR HIT LIST OF WOW-FACTOR MELBOURNE BREAKFASTS?

While we love a good degustation as much as the next #melbournefoodie, we’d be lying if we didn’t say breakfast was our favourite meal of the day. In fact, we love it so much, we’re regularly known to indulge in ‘second breakfast’ (and sometimes third and fourth…). Luckily, when it comes to brekkie, Melbourne cafes are killing it, dipping it in batter, and frying it.

We know you’re a hangry lot, so without further ado, here are our Fave 5 wow-factor Melbourne breakfasts.

Potato Hash & Mushroom Duxelles at Addict Food & Coffee

Fitzroy

Funghi fans have found a firm fave in this cute, sun-drenched corner café in Fitzroy. While Addict’s pancakes with roasted peach, passionfruit and peach syrup, and whipped mascarpone and the out-of-this-world corn fritters with kasundi and haloumi are pretty hard to pass up, we die for the mushy brekkie.

Yup, we’re talkin’ about the Potato Hash & Mushroom Duxelles with Roasted Field Mushroom, Poached Egg & Caramelised Onion. What the fig jam is/are duxelles, you ask? Basically, a delicious paste made from diced mushroom stems, onions, shallots, and herbs sautéed in butter. In other words, mushroomy manna from Heaven.

The sweet, caramelised onion, the creamy mushroomy paste, the earthy field mushroom, the lovely runny egg, and the fat potato cake to mop it all up… breakfast in Melbourne doesn't get much better than this.

Brûlée French Toast at Auction Rooms

North Melbourne

If you’re more a fan of sugar and spice and all things nice, this next Melbourne breakfast will hit the sweet spot. Regularly earning props ast Melbourne’s best café, Auction Rooms’ Brûlée French Toast with Crispy Pancetta, Poached Rhubarb, and Glazed Strawberries is something else.

Picture this: brioche dipped in egg and fried up French toast style, with a burnt sugar topping that you crack into like a crème brûlée. Drool! The sugar hit is offset by the crispy pancetta, and we reckon it’s definitely best accompanied with a glass or two of Prosecco. Winning at life, Listers!

Brekkie Greens at Barry

Northcote

One of our favourite Melbourne cafes, hands-down, Barry in Northcote, is a bit of a clean eating hotspot, proving an amazing breakfast doesn’t have to be a one-way ticket to Calorie Central.

Barry dish up some of Melbourne’s best breakfast greens—think raw broccolini, kale, avocado, black pearl barley, chilli, basil, activated almonds, coriander, pepitas, and a soft-boiled egg. Clean, lean, green, and freaking delicious, the mix of textures make this healthy breakfast far from boring, and we dig the little perk-me-up chilli hit. The goog is a nice protein hit, too, so you’ll have fuel in the tank ‘til lunchtime swings ‘round. At which point we recommend the California Superfood Salad.

Avocado Hummus Toast at Journeyman

Prahran

We know, we know. Avo on toast—whoopdidoo. But this brekkie bad boy, at Melbourne breakfast hotspot, Journeyman in Prahran, is pretty darn special. Did we mention said smashed avo comes atop toast (duh), with hummus, a sprinkling of dukkah, poachies, and HONEY CANDIED BACON? No? Well now we have.

Bite into the creamy, savoury avo-hummus blend, enjoy the crunch of the dukkah sprinkling, slice that egg and set that oozy yolk free, then dip in those delicious chunky hunks of candied bacon. An ingenious combo of harmonious flavours and textures. Also an epic #foodporn shot, which is what it’s all about, let’s face it.

Spiced Tiffin Egg at Ora

Kew

Award-winning Kew café, Ora, is home to some of Melbourne’s best breakfasts, with a menu refreshingly free of the dull and predictable, and bursting with creativity. We likee, a lot. And if you’re the vindictive type, the Spiced Tiffin Egg with Bombay Hash, Kasundi, and Cashew Crumb is the brekkie order to incite a wave of food envy in your dining companion. (Meanwhile, are there two sweeter words in the English language than ‘cashew crumb’?)

A vego-friendly version of a scotch egg (spiced carrot is in, meat is out), these delicious, Indian-inspired spiced crumbed eggs are served halved, atop potato hash, with a generous spray of crumbed cashews, atop pickled cauliflower, with a mound of kasundi (Indian tomato relish). A melding of mild curry flavours and piquant pickled veg, this is a Melbourne breakfast rite of passage!

We're thrilled to partner with MINI to bring you our Fave 5 series—our fortnightly guide to the best of the best in Melbourne. From food to fashion, Campari to Crossfit, each Fave 5 edition is researched and recommended by The Urban List, and driven by the new MINI 5-Door Hatch—putting the city at your fingertips and giving you the freedom to explore it!
