You’re Invited To Witness The First Same-Sex Wedding In Australia

By James Shackell
15th Dec 2017

It’s not often you get a chance to be a part of history, but in a few weeks you’ll be able to honestly say “I was there for the first same-sex marriage in Australia.”

Same-sex marriage is legal in Australia as of 9 January next year, and at 12:01am on that day, Teegan and Mahatia (the two lovely ladies pictured above) will be tying the knot at The Altar Electric in Melbourne. And the best part? They’re inviting all of Melbourne along for the ride. Well, as much of Melbourne that can fit inside Ferdydurke

The wedding will be held at The Altar Electric, a pop-up wedding chapel that’s been running out of Ferdydurke’s loft space for the last few months. Their whole schtick is small weddings that rock, which seems pretty appropriate at a time like this.

"We were so damned pumped when the Marriage Equality laws were finally done with and passed all the parliament jibber-wash," says Altar's Dee Brinsmead. "As Celebrants we've worked with so many couples in the past who were only able to have a commitment ceremony on the day of their wedding. When it comes to Teegan and be able to make them one of the first same-sex couples in Australia to be legally married is a real thrill."

Here’s how it’s going to work. You rock up at midnight and watch Teegan and Tie get hitched, then party till 3am with DJs and drink specials to mark the occasion.

The official Facebook event will be popping up next week, but here are the details in the meantime. Mark this one in the diary, folks.
