Good news, sugar addicts. Remember Reynold Poernomo from Masterchef 2015? Well he’s the brains behind the cult Sydney smash, KOI Dessert Bar. And KOI is landing in Melbourne next week for the first time EVER.
It’s all part of the city’s huge new Asian food hall, HWKR—a rotating collection of epic Asian pop-ups. The idea is to create a culinary testing ground, where the country’s best chefs can try new ideas or experiment with weird flavours. HWKR is opening its doors next week, and KOI is going to be one of the exclusive first tenants.
The new KOI menu is pretty hush hush at this point, but there’s a good chance it’ll mirror the Chippendale store in NSW. That means screwball combos like mango and yuzu ganache, almond gel and lemon curd. Or maybe Reynold’s signature cheesecake: lemon cheesecake topped with cheesecake Brûlée (what the...), mandarin, blood peach sorbet and marigold. We’re not sure the human tongue was meant to taste that many flavours at once...
There’s more good news. Reynold will ALSO be launching a second pop-up restaurant inside HWKR. It’s called Monkey’s Corner, and it’ll be geared more towards savoury Asian fusion. Think King Prawns doused in kombo emulsion, or flaming cocktails that’ll singe your eyebrows off.
Stay tuned for more HWKR news. We’ll be covering the opening in detail next week.
