best tacos melbourne mesa verde

Soft ones, hard ones, little ones, big ones, we all love a good… taco. We thought it was high time for an update to one of your favourite lists, so here are Melbourne’s best traditional—and non-traditional—tacos!

Mesa Verde

There might be a semi-significant climb up to Mesa Verde, but you can rely on the promise of pork pibil, pink onion and crema tacos to propel you up to the sixth level of Curtin House. Alongside a significant selection of tequila, your lamb guajillo (a type of chili), onion, avocado and pea guacamole tacos await. Start walking.

Mi Corazon

Brunswick East

It’s a well-known fact that Tequila shouldn’t be drunk lightly. Or on an empty stomach. You won’t have any issues, however, lining your tummy with Mi Corazon’s juicy fried soft shell crab tacos with carrot, red cabbage, chipotle mayo slaw and a side of guacamole. You better order two serves, just to be safe.

Los Hermanos

Lettuce talk about the rules of a good taco... that doesn't have Iceberg on it. Usually served with a generous helping of tender meat, a slather of creamy sauce and kick-ass salsa, Los Hermanos knows Melbourne can never have too many tacos of this calibre. Eat through their tailored menu of finger-licking delicious offerings this Friday night.

Trippy Taco

Fitzroy, St Kilda

With a recently opened Southside location in St Kilda, Trippy Taco’s entirely vegetarian Me-hi-can menu boasts house-made corn tortillas, avo, cheese and salad with either black beans or flavorsome chargrilled tofu. It’s impossible to miss meat when you’re (ungracefully) chowing down on their breakfast taco with free-range scrambled eggs, cheese, salsa and avocado slices. Yeah, you've been doing brunch wrong.

Touche Hombre

A Melbourne Mexican staple, grab a napkin and leave your dignity at the door. Touche Hombre’s tacos are made to be messy, with dishes like the moan-worthy fresh battered soft-shell mud crab with smoked corn puree and fennel cream on an organic blue corn tortilla. Pair with a chicken jug (it's shaped like a chicken, obvy) of blood orange margarita.

La Tortilleria

Skip the bells and whistles (or family-sized margaritas and sombreros?) at Kensington’s favourite local Mexican joint. With outdoor seating, a narrow communal bench and a handful of tables, La Tortilleria champions classic, fresh tacos with ingredients like market fish and grilled beef. You can also take a pack of soft, house-made tortillas home, if you’re sick of store-bought junk.

Radio Mexico

Northcote, St Kilda

Forget sharing at Radio Mexico, it’s every man and women for their taco-loving selves when it comes to their Mexican food. From BBQ pork belly with snapping crackling to roasted mixed mushroom tacos with crema poblano, the whole crew can buddy up with the tacos of their dreams.

Hello José

West Melbourne

On the edge of Queen Victoria Market, Hello José is reasonably hard to miss, with faded yellow walls and mismatched hand-drawn art between winking beer bottles and rainbow streamers. Order up a taco storm featuring fresh corn tortillas made daily—think pork belly with fennel and apple slaw or beer battered fish with spiced cream.

Chingon Cantina

Tacos are a mix ‘n match game at Chingon Cantina, with any four tacos priced at $23. Served in a warm, intimate rustic space, we recommend the grilled garlic prawns with chipotle creama, guacamole, fresh lime and queso!

Little Oscar

Brunswick East

In a bright, industrial space in Brunswick East, Little Oscar is quietly serving some of the best fusion tacos in Melbourne. Prop yourself up onto one of their sleek black and timber tables and order the drool-worthy Korean soft tacos with ultra-tender Wagyu beef, cheong-gochu sour cream, kimchi, slaw and spring onion. Traditional, no. But a giant, neon flashing yes to flavour.
