Go back a few years and ‘delicious brunch’ and ‘superfood’ didn’t really belong in the same sentence. Brunch options almost exclusively contained eggs, bacon, or both. Fast forward to Melbourne’s brunch scene as we know it, and it’s all stunningly designed interiors, instagrammable dishes that are virtually guilt-free and extensive coffee menus. But there’s one café that’s kicking goals way beyond the rest. (I don’t say this lightly. When it comes to brunch, I’ve REALLY done my research).
Legacy café in Camberwell is the gift that just keeps on giving. We’ve all come to expect having to choose between hardcore healthy cafes and your regular hangover hangout. But this, my friends, is exactly where the beauty lies in Legacy.
You see, the menu has been split to cater for the super food lovers and the, well… the bacon lovers, making it the perfect brunch spot for couples (or disagreeing friends). Hallelujah!
On the superfood front, there’s a tonne of uber-healthy goodies packed into the menu.
The Power Bowl is a strong favourite for a healthy brunch. It’s made with either dragon fruit or acai and is packed with coconut infused yoghurt, mango, kiwi fruit, strawberries, blueberries, banana, chia seeds, granola and hazelnut crumb. It’s beautiful, healthy AND delicious.
Legacy’s take on porridge is next level and is totally unlike the anything else we’ve seen. Served warm with cranberries, blueberries, pepitas, banana and, wait for it, whipped pumpkin butter! It’s a porridge that’ll give you all the feels and is finger lickin’ good to boot.
Chia has long been the grand priestess of super foods, so it goes without saying that there’s a dish that really heroes it on the Legacy menu. The mango and vanilla chia seed pudding comes with edible flowers strawberries and macadamias; the perfect balance of fresh breakfast flavours.
In our eyes, the real stand out is the Pitaya yogurt panna cotta. A work of art, the panna cotta is served with cacao, dark chocolate and coconut granola, strawberries, passionfruit and grilled orange. Wait till you clap eyes on it, you’ll be hesitant to tuck in, it’s so damn beautiful.
Enough about the superfoods. Cheat meal, man food, regular food…. Whatever you like to call it, Legacy does it really, really well. Hangover or no hangover, you’ll have a hard time not making a beeline for the buttermilk fried chicken. Served in a fluffy brioche bun, with charred corn slaw, mustard and sriracha mayo, we can’t think of a better antidote to superfood.
If you’re after something sweet, the hokey pokey hotcakes are where it’s at. They’re the perfect stack of light hotcakes, piled with honeycombe, orange, ricotta, vanilla bean mascarpone, pomegranates and strawberries.
So next time you’re looking to up your superfood game, but actually want some flavour to your dishes, you know were to go. You heard it here first, folks, Legacy in Camberwell is THE café to watch.
