We Check Out West of Kin

Located on the corner of Ballarat Road and Lacy Street, this heritage-listed property is an absolute gem of a find. Honestly, where do I start? Okay, okay you’re thinking, how about from the start! Well here we go…

Walking towards the entrance, I was greeted by a big smile by the lovely Alejandra, who by the end of my meal, would feel like an old friend I had known for years. She’s super friendly, full of knowledge on the menu and knows where everything is sourced from.

The beautifully fitted out restaurant, I was told, is 100 years old and was once a cheese factory. The owners kept part of the old structure and adorned the place with beautiful sourced solid timber from the country, marble tables, polished benches and floors, concrete walls and greenery. Divine.

There is also a sweet outside area, which on a warm summer night is perfect for a few cocktails, with a group of friends or a first date. This place definitely has a relaxed nature, and you don’t feel like you need to eat and run. It’s all about sharing food, laughing and enjoying the company you’re with.

West of Kin is the sister restaurant of Kin on Chapel Street, and WoK focuses more on modern Asian fusion, headed by Alex Kim and Sam Pizone, and my-oh-my was the food absolutely beautifully presented. They say you eat with your eyes (and stomach of course) and without hesitation the food had ticked both boxes! The menu is seasonal, and the picks of the night for me was the Jiangxi style chicken bao, Yunnan style lamb ribs with sesame seeds, and sweet and sour soy lacquer, quail terrine and tart of beetroot, and that was just for starters. The perfect combinations of flavours were  smooth and delicate but also filling.

Onto the mains: my picks were the baby barramundi and master stock shredded duck, Not only Instaworthy but also very tasty!

Brunch will also be on offer from the 11th March, so do yourself a favour and book a time to come here, stat. Arm yourself with an empty stomach and full battery on your phone, to capture the beautiful sights of West of Kin; the west of Melbourne sure has a winner here on its hands.
