'What's on in Melbourne this weekend?', you ask? A hellava lot, my friends! Our nifty what's on guide covers it all, with everything from hot new restaurant openings to truffle banquets to arty design fairs gracing our weekend calendar. With so many things to do in Melbourne, there's absolutely no excuse to stay home this weekend. Get amongst it, chickens!

Thursday 10th

Get a little Nordic at the inaugural Scandinavian Film Festival, kicking off in Melbourne tonight. The opening party will screen the Victorian premiere of The 100-Year-Old-Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared, followed by an after party with Cake Wines, Nordic Flavours and live tunes. See you there, ja!

Whisky lovers, prepare to be whisked away by an evening of fine sipping and sampling at The Kelvin Club. Guests will taste malt whiskies selected by The Scotch Malt Society, all paired with delectable canapés. Perfect for the whisky connoisseur and novice alike.

Are your tastes more suds than scotch? East Melbourne restaurant The Tippler & Co is teaming up with 4 Pines Brewery for Once in a Brew Moon, a 5-course degustation paired with outstanding brews. As the folks at The Tippler say, this is a 'great hoppertunity' to gather your mates and sample some top notch booze and food. We promise the evening will be better than their puns!

Still looking for things to do this weekend? Might we suggest you head to the Malthouse to catch Starry Night: The Last Hours of Vincent van Gogh, a one-man play about the life and death of the troubled artist, interspersed with images of his most famous works. This incredibly powerful, moving play is showing in Melbourne until Saturday – art-loving, theatrical folk, this isn't one you want to miss!

Friday 11th

Calling Charlie's Angels! Lucy Liu Kitchen & Bar is the latest girl in town, opening where PM24 once stood. You can expect a multicultural dining space, tasty Asian share plates and killer cocktails (we're told the coconut mojito is one to look out for!). The good news? They take reservations, and you can even book a table NOW (and say goodbye to the grumbling tummy as you wait in line!).

Melbourne's swish new Italian eatery, Chiara, is hosting Guy Grossi for The Truffle Takeover, a decadent night of truffle-y feasting. In association with Truffle Melbourne, the celebrated Italian chef will join Chiara's George Fowler, Shaun Quade and Gavin Baker for an eight-course degustation with matched wines, in the ultimate celebration of the fanciest of fungi. We had a sneak peek at the menu and it looks ridiculously delicious, each course infused with truffle (yep, even the desserts!). Banana caramel, warm polenta bread and truffle ice cream, anyone?

It's the last couple of days of winter school holidays in Melbourne, and we can bet our bottom dollar you're most likely all craft-ed out. Treat your kiddies (oh okay, and maybe yourselves) to a non-gluey outing at Inside The Brick's Bayside Lego Fan Expo. Held at Kingston Town Hall in Moorabbin, the expo will feature the block-tastic creations of Australia's top Lego masters (yep, it's a title), including a huge city and train layout, epic spaceships and other unique creations. There'll also be a huge brick pile of mini master builders to work their magic on.

Right thurr, right thurr! This weekend, rap superstar Chingy, the lyrical genius behind the hit 'Right Thurr' is about to be right hurr in Melbourne town. Our favourite mid-00's gangsta is performing an intimate concert at The Colonial Hotel this Friday night, joined by Julian Simonsz from The Voice and Sherlok & DJ Rubz. Be thurr, or be square.

This weekend, Move: Creative Experience Metatronics will see you create something from the ground up, mixing skateboard parts with sculpture, hobby motors and 3D printed parts, and other wonderful things to create your masterpiece. It's free (yep, really!) and perfect for teens on their last week of school holidays, or adults looking for a fun hands-on weekend activity.

Saturday 12th

Celebrate fabulous fungi at Truffle Melbourne, kicking off this Saturday at Caulfield Racecourse. Over two huge days, the racecourse will transform into a culinary haven showcasing the best Australian truffles and their artisan food partners, where you can meet truffle-savvy dogs, sample truffle-y fare and master truffle cooking techniques. A whopping $300,000 worth of truffles will be enjoyed over the course of the festival…that's a whole lotta fun-gi!

All truffled-out? Never!  Head to East Melbourne's GG Restaurant for the Truffle Melbourne banquet. The dinner will see three different chefs, of three different nationalities – culinary icon Philippe Mouchel, Nobu's Christopher Shane Chan, and GG's Paul Dunlop – come together for five decadent, truffle-inspired courses. Fancy some wild barramundi with truffle crust, porcini mushroom ragout and champagne jus? How about some truffled ice nougat, lemongrass milk and coconut sorbet? Oh jeez, we're already salivating. All this truffle-y goodness will be matched with drops from Levantine Hill.

Celebrated Peruvian chef Alejandro Saravia will join University of Melbourne food scholar Dr Lara Anderson in A Taste of Peru masterclass this Saturday. Focusing on Peruvian culinary traditions and modern trends, the session will feature cooking demonstrations, tastings and insights into the cuisine followed by a delicious lunch, all in the surrounds of Saravia's Peruvian restaurant, the Pastuso Cevicheria & Pisco Bar, in AC/DC Lane.

While there are heaps of goings on this weekend in Melbourne, Red Hill Brewery's Stash Weekend is something we're willing to leave town for! For this weekend only, the master brewers will be sharing their secret stash of aged and limited edition brews and barrel-aged ales, putting 10 specialty, award-winning ales on tap, including the never-before-tasted Imperial Stout, a gin barrel-aged Temptation and the Double Barrel Wee Heavy aged Scotch Ale. Book a ticket to secure your stein or simply pop by for a pint or three of your favourite. The suds will be soaked up with tasty pizza from The Happy Camper Pizza's airstream caravan.

Red Hill Brewery's Stash Weekend | 12 & 13th of July | 11:00am – 6:00pm

This Saturday, together with CERES Urban Farm, The Grain Store is hosting Full Moon Dinner, a celebration of the season's best offerings. The Full Moon Dinner will start with canapés, mulled wine and a tour of the roof top garden, where holistic farmer James Sprunt will talk about the ancient traditions of lunar gardening before the dinner commences. Guests will then feast on an entrée, main and sweet treats with the choice of magnificent matched wines.

Francophiles of Melbourne that can't wait until Bastille Day – head to Viva Bastille Day at Mr Mason to get in on the Frenchy celebrations early! Their classic 3-course French banquet menu, created by Head Chef Thiago Miranda, will feature French favourites such as escargot, traditional beef bourguigon, bouillabaisse and chocolate soufflé…oh oui, oui, OUI! Each course will be expertly matched with free-flowing wine.  We wouldn't expect less from the monsieur!

Viva Bastille Day | Mr Mason in Melbourne | 6:30 – 10:30 pm | $120 per person

Who doesn't love a big, fat salami? This weekend in Melbourne, you can learn the process of making authentic handmade salami at Olivigna. Under the watchful eye of salami master Gianni Crivelli, participants will learn how to make authentic Italian salami from scratch, using premium ingredients without preservatives. Following this hands-on masterclass, participants will be served their own freshly made salami in a traditional Italian dish, paired with a glass of local wine. Bellisimo!

Sunday 13th 

What's on in Melbourne this weekend for arts and crafts lovers? The Village Art & Design Fair, that's what! Held this Sunday at Ormond Hall in Village Melbourne, the winter market features a curated selection of art and design stalls, showcasing a plethora of wonderful wares from hand-poured, fragrant soy candles and original art works to pop-up cake and shortbread stalls. Make a day of it with lunch and drinks in The Garden, then wander into Ormond Hall for an afternoon of perusing and purchasing.

Mon petit amis, it may not be Bastille Day just yet, but you can sure as heck start celebrating it in the most French way possible – by playing petanque, eating cheese and drinking French cocktails at Mr Wow's Emporium. Cheese, you say? Jabili's Kitchen will be dishing out cheese platters, deep fried Camembert with cranberry jam (good lord, yes!) and aged cheddar with basturma and horseradish on crostinis. The evening will be in support of the local fire brigade, so grab your finest beret and get amongst the French festivities!

Bastille Day Celebrations | Mr Wow's Emporium in Fitzroy | From 4:00pm

Still looking for fanciful, Frenchy things to do this weekend in Melbourne? Well, have we got yet another très bon event for you! Head to South Yarra's A La Bouffe Bar and Bistro to celebrate Bastille Day (eve) with an indulgent afternoon of champagne. Hosted by The Champagne Dame, guests will indulge in an amazing line up of champagne, perfectly partnered with delicious cheese platter from the A La Bouffe maestros. Oui oui, merci!
