Your Guide To White Night 2016

By Ellen Seah
20th Feb 2016

The one day of the year when it’s perfectly acceptable to pull an all-nighter like a hysterical teen (and sleep in until 3pm the next day), White Night is Melbourne’s 12-hour celebration of all things culture, creative and colourful. Make it last with our guide to White Night 2016.

Kick the night off with a traditional welcome

Opening 2016’s White Night at 8.35pm, the Balit Ngulu (meaning strong voice) is a dance honouring the land and the law of the creator spirit Bunjil. A celebration with the Wurundjeri, Boon Wurrung, Taungurung, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wadawurrung families, audience members are welcome and encouraged to join the dance. Is there a better way to get into the festivity of White Night?!

A White Night themed supper at Duchess Melbourne

Featuring ivory dishes (in the spirit of White Night ofc), the Duchess Melbourne is hosting a supper from 11pm-3am. Boasting an a la carte menu, think dishes like slipper lobster roll with kewpie mayo and pickled cucumber, or white chocolate mousse with passionfruit gel and candied hazelnuts. The best part? 10 percent of all profits will go towards White Ribbon Australia. Eat with pride, people.

See yourself differently at Black Mirror

An interactive, artistic projection, Black Mirror in the Queen Victoria Gardens responds to your body movements to create a mystical, light-filled projection. Spend some time checking out your new and improved shadow!

Grab some glowing ice cream with 196below

Remember the days when you’d be left with spilt chocolate ice cream on your white top? I do, like it was yesterday… ahem. White Night is going to be a little dim (duh), so the genius team at The Original Cone Co, in collaboration with 196below have created a GloCone that lights up under ultra violet light (!!!) Get your hands on these next-level neon waffle cones, if you’re any kind of self-declared foodie.

In fact, make yourself glow at Nieuw Amsterdam

Opening until 7am on White Night, Nieuw Amsterdam will be hosting a UV party complete with UV-face paint! Get into the spirit and leave with your face (literally) glowing. Hey, at least your friends will be able to locate you when you get inevitably separated, right?

Visit the cat video festival – yes it’s a real thing

ACMI and the Walker Art Centre are bringing the highlights of the 2015 Internet Cat Video Festival to White Night this year! If you’re too cool to watch cat videos at 4am in the morning, please see yourself out now.

See the most beautiful dresses by Tae Gon Kim

Created by hundreds of fibre-optic strands, French artist Tae Gon Kim’s work is a stunning display of shimmering colour and a portrait of love and intimacy. Also, they’re the prettiest goddamn dresses we’ve ever seen, so don’t miss The Dresses at White Night.

Up your photography game

Artists Anita G and Andy Phillips will be giving up the tips and tricks of the photographic trade, so if you’re looking to up your selfie-game visit their photography hub at Birrarung Marr this White Night!

Hit up the 12-hour dance floor

Busting tunes from seven to seven in the morning, Birrarung Marr’s gigantic open-air dance floor is the perfect spot to jumpstart those faltering 3am energy levels! Whether you’re fond of the moon walk or the pointing-at-the-sky-what-do-I-do-with-my-hands style, everyone’s invited to join the epic dance party at Trip The Light Fantastic.
