Bars—we love them for a number of reasons. They’re there when we’re in desperate need of a post-work vino, provide good times on nights out, shake up tasty alcoholic concoctions and even serve our favourite thing in life (pssst, it’s food).
Come winter, the cosier the bar, the better! Whether you’re looking for a quiet corner, a snuggly couch to curl up on or warming cocktails, we’ve found the cosiest Auckland bars to hunker down at.
The Cork Gin & Whiskey Bar
The Cork describes itself as a ‘handsome wee Ponsonby bar’ and that’s exactly what it is. Sitting behind Grand Central, this small yet perfectly formed spot stocks an impressive section of whiskies, bourbons and gin, which line an entire wall. While their outdoor seating area pumps over summer, the intimate inside space and snug room out back are practically made for serious chit-chat and Old Fashioned drinking ‘til the wee hours of the morn (they’re open until 4am).
We suckers for plush furnishing and classic cocktails—two things that Hotel de Brett’s Housebar totally nails. They stock an impressive selection of boutique vino and beer as well as a solid snack menu in case the munchies kick in. We suggest bagging a spot by the fireplace and settling down with a cocktail or two.
It recently came to our attention that Neighbourhood has its very own library and the book worms inside us lost the plot. Although the bar is known for its rowdy rugby nights and hearty tucker, the library nook is set up with comfy dark red armchairs and plenty of books to bury your nose into. Order a glass of red and drift away into word world.
Dida’s Wine Lounge
Tapas and wine go hand in hand and luckily for all you cosy bar fiends, Dida’s will serve you exactly that. With a ‘wine meets food’ approach, Dida’s creates flavourful nibbly bits—duck parfait, venison meatballs and churros—to enjoy on one their many comfy couches over great wine and good chat #heckyes.
Conch Kitchen & Bar
A far cry from the packed-out bars and restaurants in Ponsonby, Conch is a welcoming spot with a focus on tasty drinks and damn good beats. They serve up South American-inspired nosh, which you can gobble up in one of their courtyard booths or at the bar. Sound like a plan? Off you go.
Stafford Road Wine Bar
If you love eating out but being snug-as-a-bug is a top priority in life, Stafford Road Wine Bar is where you need to go. This lovely neighbourhood bar is all about warm, welcoming feels, seasonal dishes and a carefully curated bevvy menu. The food will come out looking uber gram-worthy but let’s be honest, you’ll be too comfy to pull out your phone.
This friendly corner bar is an Auckland institution but has managed to remain one of the city’s best kept secrets—and you guys know how much we love a secret spot. Mo’s Bar only has room for around 20 peeps yet once you’re in, you’ll be treated to some of the best cocktails in Auckland.
Grey Lynn local, Freida Margolis oozes charm and is the epitome of a cute neighbourhood bar. Soak up the laid back vibes over a boutique beer or fight of the chill with a warming mulled wine. We won’t be surprised if you make it your local.
