They say home is where the heart is or, in this case, a good steak. The Good Home has arrived to Onehunga and we could not possibly be more thrilled! We already know we’ll be there so often—we may as well pack a suitcase and move right on in.

Bringing with it a blast from the past, you’ll find The Good Home in the newly restored Andrew Carnegie Free Library. There’s no missing it, as it is just off of Onehunga Mall on Princes St. Here, you’ll find the old building—which is in itself an architectural #TBT.

Staying true to its origins, the vibe of the gastro pub honours its past while celebrating the present. Inside, you’ll find a hip fit-out, featuring a six-metre long marble bar backed by library shelves full of knick knacks and more books than even your local brainiac could handle. With a portrait front and centre of the original man behind the building, Andrew Carnegie is keeping an eye on the antics at the bar.

Look no further than the new jaw-dropping atrium, decked out in some of the slickest style in Auckland, featuring greenery, good lighting and a grand centrepiece your followers will thank you for. Out front is a massive outdoor space, perfect for a cold one after work, to unwind with the team or even just to soak up some of that good ol’ vitamin D.

Tony Woodcock is the man behind the magic, doing Onehunga proud delivering its most gorgeous eatery yet.

“We were sure to stay very respectful to the age and wanted to bring a taste of New Zealand heritage to the now,” he says. “It’s important to appreciate the past while bringing the local community a new social hub.”

Like any good home should, the menu caters for all. Our top pick would have to be the drool-worthy rib-eye steak. Paired with creamy delectable mashed potatoes and a stack of golden onion rings, the steak comes to your plate fresh hot and sizzling...you can basically taste it with your eyes. And, when paired with the sensational béarnaise sauce you’ll find yourself soon addicted wondering where it’s been all your life!!

If turf ain’t your thing and you’re all about the surf, the miso-glazed tender hapuka fish is for you. Served over an edamame salsa (just when we thought edamame couldn’t get any better) and a dash of avocado puree, you won’t be disappointed.

If you’re a plant-only pal, not to worry as there’s plenty of options for you too! The Jerusalem Harvest dishes up gorgeous Mediterranean roasted veggies, halloumi (the cheese of the gods) topped off with a fragrant hummus that packs a kick of flavour. You’ll actually want to eat your greens! Speaking of, the pear and Whangaripo blue cheese salad featuring sweetened walnuts puts other salads to shame offering an indulgent balance between sweet and savoury.

Of course it wouldn’t be a pub without a decent bar. With more than 13 premium and craft beers on tap, a fine selection of wines, a mojito that packs a punch and freshly brewed caffeine you’ll find yourselves pining over the marble counter spoilt for choice.

It’s not often you come across a space that caters to pretty much all of your moods—whether it’s chilling out, after work drinks, a casual lunch or even a date,  but down at The Good Home you’ll find there’s a space for all to feel right at home...geddit??
