Brisbane’s Hottest Yoga Gear

By Desta Cullen - 24 Jan 2014

So I have an admission to make. I love yoga; I love the work out, the relaxation, and the whole body calm that I feel after a good session.

Now, I have another admission. One of my other favourite parts of yoga—and all exercise, actually—is finding some cah-ute outfits to wear while butchering what's supposed to be a graceful pose. (It takes practice!)

I have a sneaking suspicion, though, that I'm not the only one, and luckily for us, local yoga lovers and online store Fire and Shine stock some of the best — and some very cute — work out clothes.

Jackie and Jane at Fire and Shine curate an amazing selection of sustainably made, eco-friendly, hard-to-find yoga clothes for women on their online store. [Many of the pieces they carry are exclusively stocked in Australia by them.]

Don't just take our word for it (if you'll excuse the info-mercial phrase!). We enlisted the keen—and well-stretched eyes— of the teachers at some of Brisbane's best yoga studios to choose their favourite yoga wear looks, and tell us why they think Fire and Shine rocks.

The Dream Eco Top by Wellicious ($144.95)

Why is it your hot pick for 2014?
It looks incredibly comfortable and like nothing else I have seen in yoga wear.

How long have you been practicing or teaching yoga?
I started practicing yoga when I was 16 and I have been teaching for a year

What's your favourite yoga pose, and why?
Headstand, which is also known as sirsasana, because we spend so much time on our feet; it is so very wonderful, and beneficial to get inverted.

Favourite Fire and Shine piece?
I can't pick just one! Fire and Shine stock a wonderful range of yoga wear, in particular one of their brands has become a favourite of mine—I've purchased a few items from their Wellicious label, which I love.

Why is it your hot pick for 2014?
I like the high quality materials in their clothing, they feel soft and breathable; but also I love the fact that Fire and Shine only stock brands that are ethically sourced with no harm to the environment or people.  I like that I'm wearing something a little different, too.

How long have you been practicing or teaching yoga?
I've been practicing yoga for more than 10 years and opened my studio in 2009 — New Farm Power Yoga

What's your favourite yoga pose, and why?
I love to challenge my body so handstands are a favourite pose. These don't happen overnight, though, so they also represent all the hard work and determination that go into a regular yoga practice: just keep showing up and when you do balance on your hands it is a great feeling of lightness and accomplishment!

The Wild Diamond Leggings by L'urv ($79)

Why is it your hot pick for 2014?
They are fun and contemporary, but also very comfortable for practicing yoga in.

How long have you been practicing or teaching yoga?
I have been practicing for 13 years and teaching for 9 years

What's your favourite yoga pose, and why?
I love the grounded strength of 'Warrior' and 'Balance' poses and the freedom that twists bring to my spine.

The Wellicious Ballet Pilates Leggings ($132.96)

Why is it your hot pick for 2014?
They are something a bit different, look comfortable, and I love things that flow.

How long have you been practicing or teaching yoga?
I have been practicing yoga for 11 years and teaching for 5 years.

What's your favourite yoga pose, and why?
That's a tough one, it constantly changes, but I will always practice Adho Mukha Savasana (Downward Facing Dog).

Favourite Fire and Shine piece?
The Moonlight Top by Wellicious ($169.95)

Why is it your hot pick for 2014?
It's flouncy, soft and feminine and goes from studio to street beautifully!

How long have you been practicing or teaching yoga?
I have been practicing for more than 20 years and teaching for around 13 years.

What's your favourite yoga pose, and why?
My favourite yoga pose right now is my seat for meditation; for my relationships and my teaching this is the most important pose I can practice.  Physically my favourite pose changes pretty often, right now it's Parivrtta Trikonasana (revolved triangle pose) because I love the juicy hip stretch and twist it gives.
