A Killer Night Out in Melbourne (Karaoke, Cocktails & So Much More…)

By Iro Kotsimbos - 21 Jan 2015

The recipe for a great night out in Melbourne should be simple. Take one of the best bars in Melbourne, add one part mouth-watering food, two (or three…or four…) parts devilishly delicious drinks, a generous serving of killer tunes and, voila! You’ve got yourself a pretty bang-up awesome night on the town…right?!

If we’re being honest, though, with the sheer amount of brilliant bars in ye olde Melbourne town, it takes a little sumthin’ sumthin’ to stand out from the pack. Maybe it’s just us and our high standards (hey, only the best for you Listers!), but the existing recipe sometimes just doesn’t cut it.

So where are you gonna go for that little sumthin’ sumthin’? May we present to you Exhibit A: Rice Queen in Fitzroy.

Perched right in the middle of Brunswick Street, Rice Queen has cemented its place as one of the best bars in Melbourne thanks to the quirky fit-out, enviable drinks list and delicious Asian fusion menu.

Stepping into Rice Queen is like stepping into the kitsch, yet super cool, corners of Asia, whereby sipping punchy cocktails whilst sitting amongst Chinese lanterns, cherry blossoms and fairy lights are the norm. It’s not just drinks though at Rice Queen; there’s a full restaurant offering too with some of the best Asian fusion dishes in Melbourne—think Thai beef salad, caramelised pork bites, and Szechuan lamb shoulder. Drool.

But we digress. What REALLY gets us excited about Rice Queen, and provides that elusive sumthin’ sumthin’, is their well-earned rep as one of Melbourne’s best karaoke bars. Yup, you read right—KARAOKE.

We know what you’re thinking – ‘Umm, karaoke? Isn’t that kinda…daggy?!. Oh heck no, Listers! Forget what you’ve heard about karaoke bars in Melbourne—Rice Queen’s offering kicks butt! No dagginess here, and certainly no sad, sorry businessmen singing about their lost loves while downing a whiskey—karaoke at Rice Queen is a far more classy (yet still totally fun) option.

Tucked away at the back of Rice Queen, the karaoke room is available for private functions and fits anywhere between 4 to 16 party people (bookings essential). The best part is that you can truly customise your karaoke experience—there’s certainly no one size, fits all approach!

Karaoke at Rice Queen is based on a minimum average spend of $15 per person for each 90-minute session—from there you can go any which way you like. Whether you do dinner and drinks in the restaurant first before breaking out some ABBA, or order some of the smaller bites from the menu to be served in the karaoke room, the Rice Queen team will work with you every step of the way to make sure it’s one heck of a night.

Say you want more cocktails? No worries, Rice Queen can bring out a few jugs of ice tea cocktails (available only in the karaoke room, mind you! Try the Pimms Nippon or the Lemongrass & Ginger Ice Tea – incredible!). How about something to nibble on while you’re busting out Whitney Houston for the 17th time? Just holla for some Korean Fried Chicken or baby banh mi for you and your friends. Nom.

So next time you’re planning an epic night out in Melbourne with friends, ditch that tired formula and give karaoke at Rice Queen a spin instead. With pumping tunes, tasty food and downright addictive cocktails, how can you go wrong?!
