Your Weekend Should Start At This Richmond Bar

By Clare Acheson - 18 Jun 2015

Nothing beats that first espresso martini after a long, hard week at work. If you’re anything like me, Listers, you’ve been (mostly) good all week. But from 5pm on a Friday, the rules go out the window and it’s all about 48 hours of unadulterated cheeseboards, fried chicken, and cocktails. Friday? More like Fri-YAY! And we’ve found the perfect place to kick off your weekend’s indulgences…

Located on buzzing Church Street, Public House is one of the best bars in Melbourne for a cracking start to the weekend. Whether you consider your weekend to start on a Thursday night, or manage to hold off on the dranks until Friday, the Richmond bar’s awesome two-storey venue—complete with outdoor roof terrace, low-lit dining area (which is great for dates) and lively front bar—is a killer pick, whether you’re stopping off for one round, or looking to party on into the night.

So, let’s start with the most important feature: Cocktails. It’s no secret that we love a cocktail, and the list at Richmond bar Public House certainly doesn’t disappoint! Of course, you’ll get a great espresso martini, as well as some tasty classics, but it’s the cheeky pornstar martini we’re loving, complete with a shot of bubbly on the side—the perfect boilermaker alternative for you non-beer drinkers!

Starting to feel hungry? The team at Public House has crafted a fantastic bar snacks and full dinner menu too. If you’re starting your weekend with a crowd, you’re going to want to order the southern fried chicken, which comes with JALAPENO MAYO (seriously, guys, give us the recipe!), a couple of rounds of the twice-cooked pork sliders, and the jamon iberico and crushed tomatoes on bruschetta. Got a vego on board? Add a serving of the saganaki—trust us, it goes perfectly with an ice-cold beverage.

Luckily, Public House’s kitchen is open at lunchtime too, when it serves a delicious selection of meals to locals who have decided to ditch the sad sandwich bar for something heaps more enjoyable. If you want the place to yourself, it makes for a great private party venue, especially if you’re partial to some good times in the open air. Yup, you can book out the upstairs room for your very own do…Now to find an excuse for a party!

As anyone who’s ever had the discussion of, “Where to next?” with a crowd of tipsy mates after a few beginning-of-the-evening drinks, you’ll know it’s hell settling on which bar to move onto. Thankfully, Public House lays on DJs from 9pm on Fridays and 10pm on Saturdays, making it one of the best bars in Richmond for those who like a boogie to some new favourites as well as some old classics.

Public House, thank you. Thank you for providing us with DJs, mouth-watering food, cracking drinks and a party vibe, all under one roof—you’ve saved us endless hours of wandering the streets, wasting our weekends trying to figure out where we should be spending them. Now, is it Friday yet?
