9 Day Parties Happening In Melbourne This December

6th Dec 2018

December is dubbed many things. Silly season, festive season and luckily for us Melburnians, we can claim day party season, too.

And there’s no doubt that we’re spoilt for choices on the daily, and live music entertainment (boasting world-class acts) is no exception to that rule. Whether it’s a warehouse techno rave, a lakeside day doof at Albert Park (yep, you read that correctly), or multiple rounds of the beloved Piknic Electronik, you’ll be well convinced that it’s almost quite impossible to have nothing to do on any given weekend in Melbourne—especially in December. You’re very welcome.

St Hotel Day Party

Whether you’ve checked in to enjoy some acoustic tunes or quite simply to kick on, we think you’ll agree that the St Hotel never fails to deliver a quality night. And this month has certainly been no different, with the St Kilda fave celebrating four years of good times. In a bid to ensure they keep ‘em comin’, they’re reeling in four international acts for a special day party, including Sidney Charles, Miguel Campbell, Sirius Hood and Kyle Watson. Oh, and ‘cause they know what the people want, they’ll be slinging gourmet style street food, too.

When: December 8
Where: St Hotel, 54 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda

Smalltown at Catani Gardens

Thanks to the guys from Novel Events and Touring, we’re able to look forward to smalltown on the reg. This year we saw the cult-fave rave level up with its Marvel Stadium car park takeover, and we’ve been patiently waiting for the next round ever since. This month it’s business as usual for Novel, with smalltown setting up shop for the second time (since 2016) at St Kilda’s Catani Gardens. They’ve locked in three international electronic artists for the event, including Stephan Bodzin, Marcel Dettmann and Dense & Pika.

When: December 9
Where: Catani Gardens, St Kilda 3182

The Penny Black Day Party

Whether it’s their buttermilk chicken burger or their top-notch gig guide, the team at The Penny Black always give us a world of reasons to make the trek out North-side (unless you’re a local, that is). And their iconic backyard vibe day parties are right up there at the top of the list, too. This weekend marks exciting times for us all, with The Penny Black officially kick-starting their summer party season. The first instalment will see Melbourne duo, Orkestrated rising to the occasion, along with Short Round and more.

When: December 9
Where: The Penny Black, 420 Sydney Road, Brunswick

The Petting Zoo Festival At Yarra Park

If you’re that person who thrives and survives on a pure diet of electronic music, soon you’ll be able to roam free in your natural habitat… at Yarra Park. Think your usual trek to the MCG, minus the footy and a whole lot more raving. And glitter—we can’t forget the glitter. In terms of set-up, you can expect two stages jam-packed with electronic goodness, static art installations, as well as zoo-themed drinks. There’ll even be seats for when you need to take five from it all. They’re coining this one, “a new level of interactive production” and we’re keen to see it all unfold.

When: December 15
Where: Yarra Park, MCG

Piknic Electronik At The Sidney Myer Music Bowl

What do you call a picnic with a healthy dose of electronic music? Piknic Electronik. Yep, every summer Hardware Presents gifts us their perpetually anticipated outdoor electronic music series, which pulls up stumps in and around Sidney Myer Music Bowl. It’s the perfect fix for an idle sunny Sunday afternoon, where you’ll come for the music but you’ll stay for the vibes… and probably the food trucks, too. This month, Boogs, T-Rek and Marco Faraone are just a few of the world-class acts that will be gracing the decks across the two weekends.

When: December 9, December 16
Where: The Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Linlithgow Avenue

Dance For Your Mind At Colonial Brewing Co

Dancing certainly is good for the mind, body and soul and NFP organisation, Dance For Your Mind (DFYM) couldn’t agree more. They’re on a mission to banish stigma around mental health issues, particularly within the young adult community. This month, they’ll be throwing their eponymous dance party, (which also doubles as their inaugural event) at Colonial Brewing Co. The aim of the event, as well as the organisation is to raise awareness for mental health, with all ticket proceeds being donated to Beyond Blue. Boogying for a good cause? Sign us up.

When: December 23
Where: Colonial Brewing Co, 89 Bertie Street, Port Melbourne

Day Doof At Albert Park

Albert Park may be synonymous with a couple of things like brisk walks around the lake and brunch at Dundas and Faussett. And now the team behind Day Spa Melbourne are throwing a dash of techno into the South-side mix. To get you up to speed with Day Spa, it’s an event typically native to Pawn & Co. And now, they’ve decided to take the party to the great outdoors, to Albert Park’s Greenfields, to be exact. Sebastien Leger will be headlining the event and if Day Spa’s regular sold out status is anything to go by, you’ll wanna grab tickets before it’s too late.

When: December 23
Where: Greenfields Albert Park, Lakeside Drive, Albert Park

Christmas Eve Car Park Party At The Back Alley Social

The Bayside Social host some seriously epic parties throughout the year and come December, they make damn sure they turn it on for Christmas. Luckily for us, it’s that time of the year again when they throw their annual Christmas Eve car park party. Sure, you might be getting your jingle on in a car park and the first thing you’ll get for Christmas might be a hangover, but it is the silly season after all, isn’t it? Other than an imminent hangover, you can expect festival level production, as well as food and drinks. Our insider tip? Turn up between 12pm-2pm to score free entry.

When: December 24
Where: The Bayside Social, 120 Church Street, Brighton

Warehouse Rave At Shed 9

It’s definitely never too late to make New Year’s plans, especially when a warehouse rave loaded with bass-filled techno is on the cards. And if you’re still undecided about how you’ll be ringing in the New Year and also wouldn’t mind a trip to Spain, listen up, ‘we’ve got good news. British house and techno record producer, Carl Cox is bringing major Ibiza vibes all the way to Shed 9, with one very special set. In true New Year’s Eve style, you can expect fireworks at midnight and a complimentary drink on arrival.

When: December 31
Where: Shed 9, Central Pier, 161 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands
