What’s that they say about great minds? New Melbourne café, Like Minded Projects, on Fitzroy’s buzzing Smith Street strip, certainly proves the age-old mantra true.
Founded by Elaine So of East Malvern café-come-deli, Servery & Spoon, and Port Melbourne breakfast hangout, My Sister Says, Like Minded Projects brings together three of Melbourne’s best coffee, food and beverage producers under one roof.
The space is very much a labour of So’s two loves—design and food—and everything from the beautifully executed decor (which is dotted with polished brass detailing and white neon signage) to the smooth-as-silk flat whites feels pleasantly considered.
Raw and fresh specialists, Fred Gets, are on hand at Like Minded Projects to supply vegetarian salads, juices, frittatas, gluten-free dishes and more. Their raw, super-fresh approach means you will be sitting down to a cacophony of best-on-the-day produce that’s been paired with wholesome grains—an ideal clean eating lunch that won’t leave you hungry.
For a little something sweet, Fred has teamed up with Richmond based raw and organic chocolate specialists, Pana Chocolate, who make some of Melbourne’s best raw desserts and sweets, including lamingtons that are, by any standards, to die for, and incredible raw chocolate bars. (We couldn’t choose between the fig and wild orange, or vanilla and sour cherry, so we got one of each).
If it’s coffee you’re after, Coffee Supreme will not only to make you one there and then, but also to advise on how to create the great coffee in the comfort of your own home. As well as picking up some of their own bean blends, you can grab top-notch brewing apparatus from AeroPress and Chemex—the perfect gift (or self-gift…) for the coffee connoisseur.
Purveyors of saintly cookies, Ace, contribute a variety of organic raw biscuits and coconut-based ice-creams are supplied by Zebra Dream. If, like us, you jump at the chance to embrace your sweet tooth, we’d recommend DIY-ing your very own ice-cream sandwich—a scoop of choc-raspberry swirl squashed between two peanut butter and jelly cookies is the guilt-free nirvana you’ve been searching for.
From the iced teas (specially blended by SumT) to the plantlife (held in ceramics by local crafter P.A.L.M.S.), Like Minded Projects’ enthusiasm for collaboration marks it out as one of the most vibrant spots for lunch in Fitzroy.
‘So far,’ So told TUL, ‘the biggest hit has been the general concept of working together as separate businesses and specialising in what we know.’
While It’s a bit flat chat at the moment, So reveals she has her eye on opening LM2 in six months or so. We’ve got our fingers crossed for another triple-hit of great food, awesome coffee and tasty raw treats before 2015 is out. You heard it here first, Listers!
