Listers, there are three things we hold dear to our hearts: delicious food, a good glass of wine, and cute animals (in gifs and YouTube videos, natch). The geniuses at Zoos Victoria are bringing all three together—vino, delicious eats AND furry friends, squeee!—in a weekend of wine, wildlife and good times at all-round animal lovers’ paradise, Healesville Sanctuary.
Throughout the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (6th – 8th June), Healesville Sanctuary will be playing host to some of the Yarra Valley’s best wine, cider, cheese and chocolate makers for Zoos Victoria’s Wine & Wildlife weekend—three days of, you guessed it, gourmet food, drink and serendipitous wildlife encounters. The sanctuary will be open as per usual, allowing you to walk through bushland enclosures, see some spectacular birds of prey and meet a real life furry friend(!), with the added bonus of being able to curl up by an open fire and enjoy some tasty treats to boot.
For the price of general admission for adults, De Bortoli Winery and Nolan Wines will be on hand for you to try a hearty red or a crisp white, artisan chocolate makers Kennedy & Wilson will be serving rich chocolate delights, and to top it all off, local cider bottlers Napoleone & Co will be mulling some of their tastiest cider to create the perfect winter drink. If you’re in need of more substantial nibbles, the venue’s Sanctuary Harvest Café has created a unique menu for the Wine & Wildlife weekend, pairing local ingredients with mouth-watering flavours in a series of delicious winter warmers—rumour has it there’s a roast on the cards—and we can’t wait to get sampling these new creations!
Planning on bringing the little ones? There’s a tonne of kid-specific fun to look forward to too, as well as free entry for under-16s for the entire weekend. Expect a falling faux snow play at selected times, and opportunities to get up close and personal with some of Healesville Sanctuary’s more unusual animals—think scaled, furry and feathered friends in all shapes and sizes. And don’t forget to grab a perch for the Spirits of the Sky and Tales from Platypus Creek shows!
If a sip of hot cider, a mouthful of luxurious chocolate, and a snuggle with one of nature’s sleepy, furry friends isn’t top of your list of things to do in Melbourne this June (it’s just over an hour’s drive), Listers, we’ve got you all wrong. Save the date now for Zoos Victoria’s Wine & Wildlife weekend now and start looking forward to this warm and fuzzy winter event. (Editor’s note: Zoos Victoria is a not-for-profit organisation, with every visit helping to fight wildlife extinction.)
