Allergy-friendly food just got a whole lot easier to find now that specialty food producer Foddies is opening a new Melbourne cafe! Yep, in just a few short weeks, Albert Park will play host to the delicious low FODMAP food cafe, offering scrumptious meals to those with food allergies and intolerances—and we couldn’t be happier!
So err what’s a ‘foddie’, you ask? The quick answer is someone who asks the wait staff a LOT of questions about the menu before actually ordering a meal…But the long (and correct) answer is really someone who is on a low FODMAP diet, designed to alleviate the symptoms of Fructose Malabsorption, gluten intolerances and IBS.
Boyfriend/girlfriend team Luke Lucas and Christina Glentis came up with the idea when they were dating and struggling to find places that catered to Luke’s IBS and Christina’s fructose malabsorption and lactose intolerance. Sexy. Taking matters into their own hands, they decided to team Christina’s love for cooking with Luke’s business expertise and Foddies was finally born!
“Unfortunately, people with food allergies and intolerances simply have no decent option for eating out and are not only missing out on this experience, but in many cases actually dreading it! Foddies is trying to give freedom back to the people who have lost it,” says Luke.
The awesome thing about the new Foddies cafe is that EVERYTHING on the menu is low FODMAP, with the option of being gluten-free (if it isn’t already). “We’re really excited about the gluten-free side of things as well. We’re looking forward to Coeliacs and people with gluten intolerance eating foods they haven’t ever eaten, or haven’t eaten for a long time.”
Many of the dishes on the Foddies cafe menu will have a lactose-free option, as well as some dairy-free options too, with the view that even more options will be added as the cafe grows. And if you have any questions at all about the menu, the well-trained wait staff will be able to advise on how you can get the most out of your Foddies experience—sans annoyed looks and impatient finger tapping.
While the highly anticipated menu is still under wraps, we do know Foddies will be making their own pizza bases, offering wheat, spelt and gluten-free options, with absolutely no extra charge! They’ll also have a tapas dish with their very own low FODMAP dips, as well as a great selection of delightful sweet treats, which can be enjoyed with coffee. All menu items will also be free from preservatives and made fresh on the premises where possible. Bring it on baby!
