Melbourne’s much-maligned Docklands Stadium has had a few names in the past—Colonial Stadium, Telstra Dome, and, of course, currently known as Etihad Stadium.
But, those days of calling it Etihad Stadium are coming to an end, from September 1 this year the stadium will be known as Marvel Stadium.
Yes, the stadium that would have been named “least likely to be a superhero” had it attended high school will soon be named after the brand that invented a plethora of them.
An eight-year deal has been struck between Melbourne Stadiums Limited and Disney to secure the naming rights.
Melbourne Stadiums Limited CEO Michael Green said that there will be ‘activations’ as part of the deal, and there will be a Marvel retail store at the stadium.
Does this mean we’ll see Thor lining up at centre-half-forward, or She-Hulk playing at full back? Remains to be seen.
