In these warmer months (hmm), we need little encouragement to disrobe and jump in the nearest pool, beach or pond. But in truth, there are only so many laps we can cut, or so many hours we can aimlessly fry in the sun. So, for those who like to strike a fine balance between relaxation and excitement, we’ve conjured up a list of the best pool parties Melbourne has to offer this summer.
Adelphi pop-up party
Head to Flinders Lane’s historic Adelphi Hotel for a Melbourne pool party of epic proportions, every Sunday until March 29. Bartenders will be pouring modern takes on retro cocktails, such as the ‘Adelphi Wallbanger’ and ‘No Sex On The Pool Deck’. Of course, no pool party would be complete without the addition of a barbeque, and at Adelphi they’ll be frying up gourmet sausages and smoked brisket all afternoon. The pop-up parties are free events, but the pool area can only hold up to 70 guests at a time, so we recommend getting in early if you want to spend your Sunday poolside.
ManHunt Pool Party
The Midsumma Festival, Melbourne’s biggest and best queer community festival, wouldn’t be complete without its all-male pool party, Manhunt. Eight hours of DJs, prizes to be won for best wet speedos, and a fashion show displaying the hottest Summa bathers trends are all on the cards. It’s clothing optional for downstairs by the pool and sundeck, so have fun strutting your stuff. ManHunt is on the closing evening of Midsumma (Feb 7th) at Wet on Wellington in Collingwood.
Melbourne is loving their slip and slides this summer, with not one, but two overtaking Lansdowne Street. We’ve already had Slidestreet set up, and now on February 15th and March 9th it will be Slide Melbourne’s turn. The slide will have three lanes, is 400 metres long, and stretches from Cathedral Place, finishing up at about 50 metres from Wellington Parade. They’re providing the inflatables to ride in and the food trucks; you just have to remember to slip, slop, slap… and slide!
SoundWaves at Fitzroy Swimming Pool
Lazy days at the Fitzroy pool have just gotten that little bit more exciting with SoundWaves returning in February. Every Sunday from 1pm-5pm will see DJs and musicians playing poolside, including the likes of Joelistics, Dan Kelly and Tin Lion. On top of that, there will be a BBQ and giveaways throughout the day, face paint for the little ones, and perhaps a visit or two from the Yarra Leisure’s swim school mascot, Pug the Duck. Fun for everyone at this family-friendly Melbourne pool party.
Summer Sundays by the Pool
The Prahran pool party returns at the Aquatic Centre. Join resident DJ Mike Gurrieri and special guests for the first Sunday of every month from December to March. Expect to listen to a mixture of laidback soul, funk, jazz and world music grooves from 1pm to 6pm. If you’re hanging out Southside this summer and keen for a quick dip, you would be hard pressed to beat this pool party on a Sunday.
