Hello winter, how I haven’t missed you. Luckily, Victoria’s only winter public holiday is early in the chilly season, this Monday in fact! Shake off the winter-blues with our guide to the top things to do in Melbourne this Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Thursday 4

JAC + JACK WINTER SALE

The super-duper soft, finely made winter items from Jac + Jack are on sale starting today. This is the perfect event to stock up on your essential winter pieces so you’re not caught out in Melbourne’s ungodly icy weather without a woolly jumper. The selection of knits, coats, sweaters and tops are up to 50 percent off, only while stock lasts in store and online.

Friday 5

HELPING NEPAL – COMEDY FUNDRAISER

Every Melburnian looooves the comedy fest, so here’s one to get involved with. The Athenaeum Theatre is hosting its own miniature comedy fundraiser event to help people in Nepal rebuild their city. Every cent goes towards this fabulous cause, so there’s really no reason not to go see some of the best comedians in the world! Big names include Arj Barker, Dave Hughes, Cal Wilson, Tommy Little and newcomer Luke McGregor. Bookings are through ticketek or call 13 28 49.

THE FIFTH | WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Celebrate World Environment Day today by spoiling yourself! If you can’t afford a swanky new Apple watch, The Fifth’s gorgeously designed, minimalistic watches will be on sale for five days only starting from today, the fifth day of this month. There will be five exclusive styles available for purchase online (I think I see a pattern here), and for every tan style watch sold the company will plant a tree. Yay!

MORNINGTON WINTER JAZZ FESTIVAL

Mornington’s third Winter Jazz Festival kicks off today and runs until Monday, just to cheer everyone up at the start of the week. There’s a gigantic showcase of entertainment on offer, from laneway painting to galleries and live jazz performances to local pop up musicians. You’ve got the whole weekend, why not wander down and take a peek

Saturday 6

PIGGY PALOOZA | PRAHRAN HOTEL

Lovers of the heavenly crackling and juicy pork, get trotting down to Prahran Hotel this weekend (actually, every weekend this month, during the Roast Collection—check out more of the best roasty events here). The Prahran pub is hosting a specially designed pork feast every Friday to Sunday this month. The best part? Choose your own size of poison with one, two or three courses available. Let’s be honest, you’ll be gunning for the three. Details on the Melbourne Food and Wine website

ETSY CRAFT PARTY | NGV

The perf indoor activity as winter creeps up on the city of Melbourne, Etsy is teaching groups of Melburnians how to turn ordinary paper into beautiful works of art that you can hang in your home! Organised by one of the world’s biggest online merchandise arts and crafts websites Etsy, you can get involved at the NGV or organise your own adult craft party. Channel the child in you, with a bit more finesse. Details are here

SKI SEASON KICKS OFF

The Terminus Hotel is getting into the best game of matchmaking today. Starting this weekend, this Melbourne pub fave will be hosting a rotating range of melt-in-your-mouth roasts with their perfectly matched drinks! Held every Sunday, some pairs which we’ve heard have been tipped for coupling include pork and cider, beef and brew, and lamb with red. You can suss out the romance here

EMERGE IN THE SOUTH EAST | DANDENONG MARKET

Explore exhibitions, admire traditional artwork and stop for a homely Burmese meal at the Free Burma café.

MUNICH BRAUHAUS | ALPINE LAUNCH PARTY

You don’t have to go to work on Monday morning. So don’t waste this rare opportunity to go out on a Sunday night. The Munich Brauhaus is throwing a Alpine Launch Party for those who hate to waste a night out. You won’t need to worry about being cold either, this party encourages guests to dress in their fave snow gear—cold legs are unwelcome at this gig!

NEGRONI WEEK FINISHES

Don’t feel guilty about Monday morning’s hangover, participating restaurants at Negroni Week are donating $1 from every much-loved cocktail to a charity of their choice this week! But it all wraps up today, so make sure you don’t miss one of Melbourne’s biggest drinking events this year. You won’t even need to call in sick on Monday morning.

MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL CLOSES

It’s the LAST DAY to see Melbourne’s International Jazz Festival’s closing performances! You have extra time this long weekend, so make sure you squeeze in a performance or two before the festival leaves for good.

DUCK SUNDAYS | BOMBA | MELBOURNE CBD

Juicy, mouth-watering, fall-apart-on-your-fork duck. What could be a better pick-me-up for the start of winter (answer: nothing). The gracious chefs at Melbourne favourite Bomba are hosting a one-of-a-kind Spanish duck roast. Direct your usual Sunday lunch crew towards this event, with tapas to start, a main of duck and classic vegetables with crème catalan to finish, you won’t be going anywhere very quickly afterwards.
